I was moved by many parts of the event, and of President Biden's speech. As we know, the NASN vision is that all students are healthy, safe and ready to learn. And, the NASN mission is to optimize student health and learning by advancing the practice of school nursing. As President Biden asked us all, "Will we master this rare and difficult hour? Will we meet our obligations and pass along a new and better world to our children? I believe we must. I’m sure you do as well. I believe we will." This course summarizes current COVID-19 data and statistics, reviews existing COVID-19 tools and resources, and describes tools that can be used to guide K-12 school personnel to reduce the risk of COVID-19 as in-person classes resume. New Ad Council YouTube Video for Nurses Nurses: Answers for COVID-19 Vaccine Questions for Healthcare Providers features nurses from several national nursing organizations, including school nurse Gloria Barrera, the president of the Illinois School Nurse Association. This video provides information to address questions from families and other school community members on the COVID-19 vaccines. COVID-19 Trends Among Persons Aged 0-24 Years CDC released an MMWR on COVID-19 Cases in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults. Trends among children and adolescents aged 0–17 years paralleled those among adults. To enable safer in-person learning, schools and communities should fully implement and strictly adhere to multiple mitigation strategies. CDC Vaccine data tracker CDC has a resource to quickly see how your state or territory is doing administering COVID-19 vaccines compared to others. Additional data is available at this CDC site. Improving School Community and Student Health More Comprehensive State Guidance Can Support the Whole Child during COVID-19 States have released recommendations for reopening schools, many of which address various aspects of student health and well-being. However, these recommendations include gaps in both the comprehensiveness and specificity of guidance with respect to how schools should support the whole child during the pandemic. RESOURCES Mark Your Calendar Bystander Intervention - Online Abuse 1 PM EST January 22, 2021 As more of our personal and professional lives go digital, online hate and harassment are on the rise. Each and every one of us can be an ally. Participants will receive the tools they need to intervene safely and effectively in online abuse using Hollaback!’s 5D’s of bystander intervention. Learning objectives include: understanding what online harassment is and how to identify abusive tactics; the impact online abuse can have; and concrete strategies for how to distract, delegate, document, delay, or directly intervene in a way that is safe, effective, and centered on the needs of the person being targeted.
