“My family left our home in the Congo because of the political violence. For five years, we were refugees in Kenya, and we were so excited when we found out we would be going to America.

The first people to welcome us at the airport in North Carolina were from USCRI. They brought us home to a beautiful apartment. We did not always have a bed to sleep on before. In the new apartment, we had separate beds with mattresses and separate bathrooms - it was a big dream come true!

One of my biggest surprises was that they had cooked food for us, not American food, but food from our home country that we really liked. That food made me feel at home. It was wonderful.

Therese (left) graduated as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) this year
The USCRI volunteers took us to get shots and enroll in school. That was such an important help for us. Every year for the next five years, they brought me and my siblings school supplies. With USCRI’s help, I graduated from high school and applied to college.

I don’t have the words to explain all the ways the people at USCRI have helped. But the most important thing was they gave us back our self-esteem. When you are living with fear it is hard to believe in yourself. It affects you so much.

This year I completed Certified Nursing Assistant training at Central Carolina Community College! My goal is to become a nurse. I have ambition. I want a chance to be all that I can be.”
