NEW MEXICO STUDENTS FLEE THE STATE FOR IN-PERSON SCHOOLING

The Governor’s decision to not have students in classes continues to have a devastating impact on our children and families. Now, many students are crossing the border into Texas to go to school. Classes are open there. Dozens of New Mexico students have moved to one Texas school district where residency is required. It’s bad enough that we have the worst education in the nation, the state can’t find 12,000 kids and students are taking their lives, but now we’re losing students to neighboring states where they can go to class, be with friends and play sports. Reopen our schools, Governor.

ALBUQUERQUE STILL WRESTLES WITH MURDER PROBLEM IN 2020

The City of Albuquerque this week saw its 76th homicide in 2020. That's four shy from last year's record number of murders in the city. On Sunday, police were called to a gas station where they found a man beaten. He died at the scene. Despite constant promises of addressing the crime crisis in Albuquerque, Mayor Tim Keller has done little to crack down on this problem. FBI statistics show that Albuquerque's violent crime rate is almost three times the national rate. It's time to replace Keller in 2021 with a mayor who will get tough on crime.

ALBUQUERQUE CHURCHES FACE $5,000 FINES FOR HOLDING CHRISTMAS SERVICES

State officials plan to serve Legacy Church and Calvary Church “notices of contemplated action” after both houses of worship appeared to have violated the Governor’s Public Health Order. That means hefty and unjust fines. The churches had posted Instagram videos showing packed Christmas services. This is another example of how the state is exceeding its authority, and government is violating our Constitutional rights. Everyone must have the right to worship and to assemble. New Mexicans’ freedoms are being taken away.

LAWMAKERS PUSH TO CHANGE EMERGENCY RESPONSE LAW

There’s bipartisan support at the Roundhouse to modify the state’s emergency response law in order to give lawmakers more of a say in key decisions. Throughout the pandemic, Gov. Lujan Grisham has exercised her gubernatorial authority to make rules and mandates as she sees fit. Now, lawmakers want to provide input in such public emergencies, and they believe they should have a constitutional role to make vital decisions. Some Republicans have pushed for legislative approval for an emergency public health order to be extended beyond 30 days. Since the pandemic began, the Governor has had an authoritarian approach in this pandemic. So far her decisions have destroyed our economy, shuttered hundreds of businesses, lost jobs and failed New Mexicans by not opening schools.

FRUSTRATED BAR OWNERS ORGANIZE GROUP TO PUSH FOR HELP

New Mexico bar and entertainment venue owners are taking action to try to get some badly needed help. They have now organized an association to lobby on their behalf. Under the state’s 3-tiered color-coded plan, “close-contact recreational facilities” will remain closed even at the least restrictive “green” level. Bars and these other venues may not survive. The Governor’s Public Health Order has crippled these establishments. What’s even more punishing is that bars are paying liquor licensing fees to the state. It's time to treat business owners fairly and justly.
