Hi John,

My name is Katharine. I'm a parent, educator, and member of the GLSEN Board of Directors. Five years ago, my family suffered one of the worst things imaginable. We lost our son, Kyler, to suicide. Kyler was a truly unique soul. He was an amazing artist, a phenomenal musician, and a gifted writer. And he really, really loved school.

Kyler came out as transgender when he was thirteen, and our family did everything we could to advocate for him. But our support was not enough to combat the misunderstanding and intolerance that he faced every day.

On May 18th, 2015, Kyler took his own life. Losing a child to suicide is an experience that doesn't really end. It changes as time goes on, and you figure out what to do in the aftermath.

For me, it's meant becoming an advocate and teaming up with GLSEN to make a difference.

One of the really powerful things that GLSEN does is show people like me how we can be a force for change, and partner with us to do it.

Without GLSEN, Kyler's story and the stories of so many others would never be told. This is why we must ensure that GLSEN continues to be able to do this work. But we can’t do it without your support.

Unfortunately, Kyler's story is not unique. There are so many other parents, teachers, advocates, and students who have their own stories to tell.
