Hi John,

My name is Katharine. I'm a parent, educator, and member of the GLSEN Board of Directors. Five years ago, my family suffered one of the worst things imaginable. We lost our son, Kyler, to suicide. Kyler was a truly unique soul. He was an amazing artist, a phenomenal musician, and a gifted writer. And he really, really loved school.

Kyler came out as transgender when he was thirteen, and our family did everything we could to advocate for him. But our support was not enough to combat the misunderstanding and intolerance that he faced every day.

On May 18th, 2015, Kyler took his own life. Losing a child to suicide is an experience that doesn't really end. It changes as time goes on, and you figure out what to do in the aftermath.

For me, it's meant becoming an advocate and teaming up with GLSEN to make a difference.

One of the really powerful things that GLSEN does is show people like me how we can be a force for change, and partner with us to do it.

Without GLSEN, Kyler's story and the stories of so many others would never be told. This is why we must ensure that GLSEN continues to be able to do this work. But we can’t do it without your support.

Will you join me in donating to GLSEN today?

GLSEN is making a real difference every day, and that's why I have made it a priority in my life to be a part of it. As a Board member, I have a real understanding of how effective this incredible organization is, and how efficient they are with each dollar.

Unfortunately, Kyler's story is not unique. There are so many other parents, teachers, advocates, and students who have their own stories to tell.

I hope we can count on you to make a special year-end gift today. Your gift to GLSEN will help amplify voices to reach local, state, and national influencers and decision makers - wherever they will have the greatest opportunity to defend our communities from the hatred, bias, and discrimination LGBTQ youth are facing today.

I still think about Kyler every day.

By supporting GLSEN, you can help make sure what happened to Kyler never happens to another student.

Gratefully,
Katharine Prescott
Kyler's mom
