Greetings! On this day nine years ago, my best friend, Brian Mast, nearly made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan. While working as a bomb disposal expert, he was clearing paths for his fellow soldiers so they could push further into Taliban territory. The last bomb that he discovered exploded beneath him, causing the loss of both of his legs and left index finger. When we got the news about what had happened, I’ll be honest...we didn’t know what to expect. How would it impact his wife and baby boy? Would he ever be able to walk again? What would this career soldier do with the rest of his life? But while we were worried, Brian had nothing but resolve... Resolve to learn to walk again. Resolve to prove to his kids that his best service to our country was still ahead of him. Resolve to take the fight back at the terrorists who blew off his legs! Brian often tells me that, while serving in the Army wasn’t always what you’d call “fun,” he still doesn’t regret a single second of it - even the split second that cost him his legs. The thing about Brian is...all he ever wanted to do was serve his country, and he’s overcome more than anybody else I know to accomplish that mission. So, today especially, I am incredibly proud to call Brian my friend (going on nearly 20 years!). And, I know that there is not a single person in Congress who is more dedicated to serving our country than Brian.
