On this day nine years ago, my best friend, Brian Mast, nearly made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan. While working as a bomb disposal expert, he was clearing paths for his fellow soldiers so they could push further into Taliban territory. The last bomb that he discovered exploded beneath him, causing the loss of both of his legs and left index finger.
When we got the news about what had happened, I’ll be honest...we didn’t know what to expect. How would it impact his wife and baby boy? Would he ever be able to walk again? What would this career soldier do with the rest of his life?
But while we were worried, Brian had nothing but resolve...
Resolve to learn to walk again. Resolve to prove to his kids that his best service to our country was still ahead of him. Resolve to take the fight back at the terrorists who blew off his legs!
