Be safe - be hopeful Thank you for your support! We appreciate your support all year, every year. But it has been especially meaningful in 2020 as we face the pandemic, racial injustice, devastating climate events, and a stressful election cycle. So many have stepped up to support your communities, your neighbors and even strangers, showing compassion and a willingness to help.You continue to be such an inspiration to the 1000 Friends Board and Staff! We hope you'll take some time during the holiday weekend to relax, get outside and enjoy the natural beauty Wisconsin has to offer. Stay safe. Winter Playbook We know this winter may be tougher than usual due to the Covid pandemic. Abe Lenoch, WAT Project Manager, put together a Winter Playbook to help support active living this winter. We encourage communities to find innovative ways to keep folks active so we put together a collection of winter events and suggestions that are safe and healthy. Please share this resource widely! [email protected] 6th in Gregg May's blog series - Land Use & Transportation Transportation Connection – Neighborhood Preservation It’s difficult to visualize the damage that downtown freeways have caused our cities. For many, these highways have always been there, providing economic development and efficient travel into cities from the suburbs. Their role as a cornerstone of racial segregation, and their destruction of municipal budgets and the urban fabric has left our collective memory. Read more... Rails to Trails & People for Bikes Federal Active Transportation Agenda 1000 Friends of Wisconsin Supports the federal active transportation agenda from Rails to Trails and People for Bikes. Their federal agenda includes reauthorizing the only source for funding for bike and pedestrian infrastructure in Wisconsin, the Transportation Alternatives Program and Recreational Trails Program. It also stresses the need to focus on equitable planning, climate, and connectivity within active transportation. Read the full agenda and consider supporting. Check it out! Leopold Schoolyard Update This fall, the Leopold Green Schoolyard Committee tackled some of the flooding problems on the schoolyard by installing their own rain garden! Leopold students and families now have a place to explore native wildflowers and all the life that comes with them. We're excited to announce a new partnership with MMSD to expand our work at Leopold School in 2021!
