As an organization that champions voices excluded from our discourse, PEN America has spotlighted the unique bleakness of the current pandemic for those who are incarcerated and face isolation, risk, and fear under a far more crushing lockdown than the rest of us have endured. As PEN America’s Prison and Justice Writing Program director, I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of words to sustain dignity and morale and foster meaningful connections for those behind the walls.
