Friend —

As an organization that champions voices excluded from our discourse, PEN America has spotlighted the unique bleakness of the current pandemic for those who are incarcerated and face isolation, risk, and fear under a far more crushing lockdown than the rest of us have endured. As PEN America’s Prison and Justice Writing Program director, I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of words to sustain dignity and morale and foster meaningful connections for those behind the walls.

SUPPORT THE FREEDOM TO WRITE

But the Prison and Justice Writing Program, along with the many other initiatives led by PEN America that provide an avenue for writers and their voices, needs your support in order to keep going. Will you contribute what you can to support PEN America's work?

With your help, the Prison and Justice Writing Program has amplified the writing of thousands of imprisoned writers by providing free resources, skilled mentors, and audiences for their writing for over four decades. Amid this pandemic we have created a pipeline to make these voices heard through newsletters, online events and published pieces, spotlighting facets of the pandemic that would otherwise go overlooked. Help us continue doing this work in the years to come. Your contribution will go towards supporting writers, bolstering all of PEN America's programs, and protecting the freedom to write.

In solidarity,

Suzanne Nossel, PEN America
