Greenpeace Africa Presents U.S-Kenya Plastics Petition
Over 20,000 people have come together to oppose the export of more plastic
waste to Kenya. After months of pressure, Hon. Betty Maina, Cabinet
Secretary, Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and Enterprise Development
received the petition calling for her to take a stand against advocacy from
lobbyists from the American Chemistry Council to make Africa a dumping

RISE Southeast Asia, an initiative of Health Care Without Harm SE Asia,
will launch a leadership and advocacy alliance led by healthcare

Few know that car tyres are unseen mega polluters. They're a stealthy
source of microplastics in our environment, which emit powdery particles as
they’re worn down on roads. Car tyre dust is now a major source of
microplastic waste in our oceans, with one study [25] putting it at 28%.

NJ BAG BAN: GOV. PHIL MURPHY SIGNS NATION'S MOST STRINGENT BAG, STYROFOAM
BAN INTO LAW
Congratulations New Jersey! Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law last week the
nation's most wide-ranging ban [29] on disposable plastic products along

2020 AASHE Sustainability Award Finalists Announced
The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education
(AASHE) has announced the finalists for the 2020 AASHE Sustainability
Awards. With the help of volunteer judges from the community, the awards
program raises the visibility of high-impact sustainability projects,
pioneering research, and student leadership, helping to disseminate
innovations and inspire continued progress toward environmental, social and
economic health. This year’s winners will be announced Dec. 3, 2020,
during a virtual AASHE Sustainability Awards Ceremony [32] that begins at
noon Eastern.

REPORT: LITTERED BOTTLES AND CANS: HIGHER IN VIRGINIA THAN IN STATES WITH
BOTTLE BILLS
Clean Virginia Waterways of Longwood University released a report that
shows plastic bottles, glass bottles, and aluminum cans are approximately
two and half times more frequently littered in Virginia (a state without a
bottle bill) than in states with bottle bills. Read more. [34]
Apply for the Scripps-Rady Ocean Plastic Pollution Challenge
The Scripps-Rady Ocean Plastic Pollution Challenge is a unique 6-month
accelerator program focused on identifying effective, evidence-based
approaches that will curb the flow of plastic into the ocean, with a
specific focus on marine conservation and marine cultural preservation
areas along California’s coast. The program runs January - June, 2021,
and participants will engage in a series of virtual short courses,
team-based research, and a final two-day challenge to pitch solutions.
