RSVP for December 3 Tributary Talk with Maria De La Cruz and Nausheena Hussain

We miss being together with you in person, so we’re planning a Tributary Talk: a Facebook Live get-together next month. Hear HFJ President Maria De La Cruz and Reviving the Islamic Sisterhood for Empowerment Executive Director Nausheena Hussain share a bit about what it means to lead and live in 2020—and what might be on their minds as 2021 rounds the corner.

Expect these two friends and colleagues to talk about the brilliance of local BIPOC organizing—and what we as individuals and the broader philanthropic community can do to protect and elevate it. Equal parts laughter and seriousness, our Tributary Talk won’t be the same without you. RSVP <[link removed]>today!

The idea behind this community conversation comes from Maria's Tributaries series of story-posts. We hope to share a bit about HFJ's vision, our approach to leadership and wellness, and how we sustain ourselves in this moment. It's our way of staying connected and inspired during the ongoing pandemic.

Visit HFJ's website for a closer look at our Tributaries project <[link removed]>.

Attend the Giving Project Info Session TOMORROW, November 12

The application process is still open for the next Giving Project <[link removed]>! The 2021 Giving Project cohort will be an online experience from February to June 2021. We’re looking for 20 people to be part of this year’s cohort who are ready to dig in digitally and raise resources in their networks for BIPOC-led organizations advancing justice in Minnesota. The priority deadline for applications is coming up: November 20, 2020. BIPOC, LGBTQ people, and low- or no-wealth individuals are especially encouraged to apply.

Interested in being part of the 2021 Giving Project cohort? Join our third and final information session on Zoom tomorrow, November 12 at 7 p.m. to meet Headwaters staff and Giving Project alumni! Learn more about the model and get your questions answered before you apply. RSVP <[link removed]>today!

Can’t make one of these dates, but still interested? Contact Program Director Allison Johnson Heist <[link removed]>for more information or learn more about our last cohort <[link removed]>.

Funding opportunity! Accepting The Transformation Fund applications beginning November 17

We are thrilled to launch the second phase of The Transformation Fund <[link removed]>. Grants will provide $ 25,000 of general operating support per year for three years, for a total of $ 75,000 to BIPOC-led, Minnesota-based groups that use a community organizing approach to advance justice, collective liberation, and self-determination. Eligible organizations will want to tell us about how they build power and work to transform existing unjust systems or build new, more equitable ones.

We begin accepting applications through our grant portal on Tuesday, November 17. The deadline is 5 p.m. Central on Thursday, December 17.

The multi-year commitment, flexible funding, and dollar amount demonstrate Headwaters’ trust in organizations, responsiveness to movement needs, and commitment to the long-term sustainability of the field.

For more information, please visit our website <[link removed]>or contact Program Director Melissa Rudnick <[link removed]>with general questions: 612-400-6266 or [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]?subject=About The Transformation Fund>.

#GTMD2020 & HFJ

Headwaters will be one of the nonprofits you can donate to next Thursday, November 19, during Give to the Max Day. We’re giving extra thanks to the GiveMN Team for using their platform to help people connect with and donate to organizations that are led by and for Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color (BIPOC) this year.

We created a special #GMTD-specific campaign to raise money for The Transformation Fund. It’s a fund we launched earlier this year in response to the murder of George Floyd and to the ongoing culture of violence and white supremacy in our society’s systems and institutions. You can visit our GiveMN campaign page <[link removed]>or go directly to The Transformation Fund page <[link removed]>on our website. The journey toward justice, systems change, and liberation takes time and needs resources. Thank you for being a part of this work with us.

A Note from Director of Individual Giving Mary Delorié

The season of generosity has officially begun. For you, HFJ donors, the season of generosity is year-round. You made that clear as you came out in droves to support our new rapid response funds this spring and summer. During our 2019-2020 fiscal year nearly 900 NEW donors--local, national, and international--joined our efforts. Welcome! Your trust in Headwaters is not taken for granted. We will continue to carry this collective work forward--the work of supporting movement organizers across our state who are doing bold things and making real change to dismantle systems of oppression.

Our grantees are tending to the here and now—supporting vulnerable communities—while simultaneously building for the future with a long-term view of the work ahead. Headwaters has been investing in equity and justice, organizing, power-building, justice, self-determination, and collective liberation for 36 years.

A donation to Headwaters is an act of resiliency and transformation <[link removed]>. Thank you.

Meet Grassroots Gift Officer Chris Olson

In October 2020 HFJ welcomed a new member to the development team. Please share a warm welcome with Chris Olson {he/him/his} who joins us as a transplant to Minneapolis. Originally from Wisconsin, Chris returned to the Midwest with his husband after having worked at a sister foundation, the Social Justice Fund NW, based in Seattle, Washington. It was there he participated in not one, but two Giving Project circles!

Chris is looking forward to meeting the HFJ community in the coming months, and will be the primary contact for a majority of donors. You’ll soon hear from him or Director of Individual Giving Mary Delorié with a personal request for a year-end gift to Headwaters.

Our 2021 North Star Fellowship will focus on housing cooperatives and land trust models for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. As a cohort, fellows will explore the power and landscape of resident-controlled community ownership models that are permanently affordable and provide dignified housing options for our communities. Also new this year, folks need to apply to the fellowship in groups of two or more. No one can cooperate alone!
