15 days ago, Hurricane Dorian ripped through the Bahamas killing at least 50 (likely many more) and leaving thousands more missing. The storm also destroyed tens of thousands of homes, leaving an estimated 70,000 people homeless.

Bahamian refugees are now looking to the United States, a beacon of hope and light, to provide safety and shelter while their islands are being re-built. So, I have introduced legislation in the House to grant Bahamian refugees Temporary Protected Status (TPS), so they can seek asylum here in the United States while their islands are being re-built. And we already have more than 30 cosponsors!

But Trump has denied Bahamians the TPS designation, essentially closing the border to people of color who are victims of a devastating natural disaster. Let’s not mince words: this decision is anti-black, anti-immigrant, and anti-American.

It is completely unacceptable that we’ve now come to expect that this Administration will not provide humanitarian aid to other nations, especially to Black nations. Unfortunately, Trump has made it clear: as long as he is in the White House, people of color will not be welcome in America.

As a Member of Congress, I pledge to continue to uphold our duty to welcome and protect individuals from across the globe who seek asylum from humanitarian crises, especially when this Administration won’t. But I need your help.
