Dear Friend, Though it wasn’t a complete surprise, given the fact supporters out raised the opposition by something like 400 to 1 (!), I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t upset about the fact last night witnessed four states legalize marijuana. These were very tough races from the very beginning – the pro side brought millions from dark money groups while the anti side ran hyperlocal and grassroots supported campaigns. And though we are still making sense of the numbers, I am not without hope. 35 states have not legalized marijuana – and the composition of the U.S. Senate almost assures no federal legalization action in the near future. No matter what, our work is far from over. Indeed, it’s needed more than ever before. In legal states, we have to make sure there are warning labels, potency limits, and further restrictions on both products and pot shops. We are now assembling our after-action plans and teams for these states. Please consult our local affairs page and toolkits for next steps in key states. Join me and Luke on Friday as we try to make sense of all of this during a 4:00 PM Facebook Live. Also, make sure you are registered for our upcoming webinar with Dr. Raymond Bertino, on Thursday November 12, to hear about how healthcare workers are affected by marijuana commercialization. We have lots to do. Thank you for being part of this work.
