ABC's Biden Town Hall includes two LGBTQ-focused questions as
GLAAD continues to drive LGBTQ inclusion in election media
Throughout the 2020 Presidential Election cycle, GLAAD has been
contacting hosts and producers to advocate for LGBTQ inclusion in
nationally televised Presidential candidate debates and town halls.
LGBTQ voters deserve to know where candidates stand on our issues. In
last week's Biden Town Hall on ABC, two LGBTQ-related questions
were asked: the first regarding the erosion of LGBTQ rights; and the
second from a mom with a transgender daughter worries about the lack
of protections for LGBTQ people.

New and Rapid Response
GLAAD releases video highlighting Judge Amy Coney Barrett's
anti-LGBTQ record and also calls her out for using the term
"sexual preference"
After Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett used the term
"sexual preference" instead of "sexual
orientation" during her confirmation hearings for the Supreme
Court, GLAAD responded to the moment on Twitter citing our Media
Reference Guide. "The correct term is 'sexual
orientation.' 'Sexual preference' is a term often
used by anti-LGBTQ activists to imply that sexual orientation is a
choice." Following this moment from the Supreme Court
confirmation hearings, GLAAD released a video that highlights
Barrett's anti-LGBTQ record and asks viewers to "be the
judge" of whether she is fit to serve on the Supreme
Court.

GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis speaks with The Hill about
GLAAD's election work
The Hill's Changing America section published an interview with
GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, focused largely on how
GLAAD is holding the media accountable for not addressing LGBTQ issues
during the 2020 election cycle. "We are being left out of the
conversation. This is exactly what happened in 2016 as well, we were
left out of the conversation, and it's too critical, we're too
big of a voting bloc," Ellis told Changing America.
"That's been a community effort from the LGBTQ community
because our rights are on the ballot this year," Ellis
said.

GLAAD Pays Tribute
GLAAD pays tribute to pioneering trans journalist and advocate Monica
Roberts
After hearing of the death of pioneering transgender journalist Monica
Roberts, GLAAD honored the TransGriot writer. GLAAD worked to share
stories of Monica's incredible work and legacy in media outlets
including The New York Times. Through her work, Roberts brought
awareness to the violence against, and the accomplishments of, the
trans community at a time when mainstream outlets were not covering
these crucial issues. In 2016, GLAAD honored Roberts at the GLAAD Gala
San Francisco with a Special Recognition Award. Monica's site
TransGriot also received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Blog in
2018 and was nominated four other times.
