New and Rapid Response
GLAAD releases video highlighting Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s anti-LGBTQ record and also calls her out for using the term “sexual preference”
After Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett used the term “sexual preference” instead of “sexual orientation” during her confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court, GLAAD responded to the moment on Twitter citing our Media Reference Guide. “The correct term is ‘sexual orientation.’ ‘Sexual preference’ is a term often used by anti-LGBTQ activists to imply that sexual orientation is a choice.” Following this moment from the Supreme Court confirmation hearings, GLAAD released a video that highlights Barrett’s anti-LGBTQ record and asks viewers to “be the judge” of whether she is fit to serve on the Supreme Court.

The Hill’s Changing America section published an interview with GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, focused largely on how GLAAD is holding the media accountable for not addressing LGBTQ issues during the 2020 election cycle. “We are being left out of the conversation. This is exactly what happened in 2016 as well, we were left out of the conversation, and it's too critical, we’re too big of a voting bloc,” Ellis told Changing America. ”That’s been a community effort from the LGBTQ community because our rights are on the ballot this year,” Ellis said.
