** Binational Protestors Converge On The Border To Demand Restoration Of Asylum

"Marchers converged on the U.S.-Mexico border Wednesday morning to protest the treatment of asylum-seekers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Tijuana, asylum-seekers marched to the El Chaparral port of entry, demanding that the U.S. restore asylum proceedings for the thousands of migrants fleeing their home countries and arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. Across the border in San Ysidro, advocates read the stories of asylum-seekers...

Before the pandemic, many asylum-seekers were waiting months in Mexico for their chance to appear in a U.S. court for an asylum hearing. As COVID-19 limited travel across the border, however, the US asylum system has nearly ground to a halt, and the U.S. has expelled anyone who crosses the border without authorization in a matter of minutes.

It has also postponed all scheduled asylum hearings for those in the "Remain-in-Mexico" program.

"There’s a lot of uncertainty, and fear for our asylum-seeking siblings in Tijuana. Their dates are having to be postponed. There’s a lack of information, a lack of resources, they don’t have any certainty in their asylum process,” said Dulce Garcia, the executive director of Border Angels.

The two groups converging at the border issued a list of demands — including the end of Remain-in-Mexico, the reopening of the border for asylum-seekers, more support for immigrants from the Mexican government and the end of waiting lists for people who want to declare asylum."

"Dulce Garcia, a DACA recipient and Chula Vista-based immigration lawyer, is one of the plaintiffs in the case that went before the Supreme Court. She said she’s working to encourage people who can vote to vote, focusing not only on the presidential race but also Congress.

“We hope the elections change all of this so that we don’t have to keep fighting for our existence here,” Garcia said. “It’s exhausting.”

She said that the legal team on her case and the cases linked to it are already planning to take the new restrictions back to court.

“If we have to take this again to the Supreme Court, we will,” she said."

We did it again, we freed another person from detention, and it’s all thanks to YOU! Meet Bilal, a Mauritanian asylum seeker who has been in Imperial Valley Regional Detention Center for four months. He is 19 years old and the youngest person we have bonded out to date. It pains us to know at his young age has had to go through the horrors of detention amidst a global pandemic, but we are hopeful for his future and new beginning in Philadelphia.
In sharing every story, and posting every bond, it is our hope that we will all learn to welcome instead of to fear. ** Shelter Aid

Last week, we continued our migrant shelter assistance in Tijuana by supporting Ejercito de Salvacion by buying them a very much needed washer, dryer, fridge and stove! We are so elated to keep helping this shelter as it houses only women and children. (We were also able to take a few soccer balls that were mailed to our office!).

So many of these appliances we have in our home and don’t realize the importance in our everyday lives. Especially in these shelters, where you may only have one change of clothes, a washer and dryer becomes essential. They also serve the shelter to help sanitize and take precautions against COVID.

They also now have a place to store and cook fresh produce and groceries we also help them purchase, and it’s all thanks to you.

Lawyers can’t find the parents of 545 migrant children after separation by Trump

The tragedy of family separations isn’t over.

"Three years after the Trump administration started separating immigrant families arriving on the southern border, lawyers say they still haven’t been able to reach the parents of 545 affected children, according to court documents filed Tuesday night.

Some of the children involved may never see their parents again. Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union said that they still cannot find the parents of ** 283 children ([link removed][UNIQID])
despite thorough on-the-ground searches, and don’t expect to be able to reach them by telephone, meaning that the families may never be reunited.

Many of the families involved were separated in 2017, before the Trump administration began separating immigrant families routinely, hoping to deter immigrants from crossing the border without authorization."

Mexican immigrant dies in Border Patrol custody in Laredo

"A male who had crossed the border illegally died in the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol at the Laredo Medical Center, said authorities over the weekend.

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection is saddened to report the death of a 36-year-old Mexican national male on Saturday afternoon in a Laredo, Texas area hospital. We extend our condolences to his family,” CBP said in a statement."

US Ice officers 'used torture to make Africans sign own deportation orders'

Cameroonians say officers choked, beat and threatened to kill them, as lawyers tell of pre-election removal drive

officers allegedly tortured Cameroonian asylum seekers to force them to sign their own deportation orders, in what lawyers and activists describe as a brutal scramble to fly African migrants out of the country in the run-up to the elections.

Many of the Cameroonian migrants in a ** Mississippi ([link removed][UNIQID])
detention centre refused to sign, fearing death at the hands of Cameroonian government forces responsible for widespread civilian killings, and because they had asylum hearings pending.

According to multiple accounts, detainees were threatened, choked, beaten, pepper-sprayed and threatened with more violence to make them sign. Several were put in handcuffs by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) officers, and their fingerprints were taken forcibly in place of a signature on documents called stipulated orders of removal, by which the asylum seekers waive their rights to further immigration hearings and accept deportation."
