Last week Samuel Paty was brutally murdered in a Parisian suburb for teaching his students about the basic human right of free speech. A right that is protected by both the French constitution and the European Human Rights Act. A right that we cherish and celebrate.

Tanzania's incumbent president John Magufuli looks certain to be returned to power in next week's elections – independent surveys say that 80 per cent of people on the mainland and 71 per cent in Zanzibar are going to vote for him.
