Samuel Paty: an educator, a father and a
free speech martyr

Last week Samuel Paty was brutally murdered in a Parisian suburb for teaching his students about the basic human right of free speech. A right that is protected by both the French constitution and the European Human Rights Act. A right that we cherish and celebrate.

Tanzania: will Magufuli return to power in
free and fair elections?

Tanzania's incumbent president John Magufuli looks certain to be returned to power in next week's elections – independent surveys say that 80 per cent of people on the mainland and 71 per cent in Zanzibar are going to vote for him. Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett is likely to be confirmed next week but she did little to allay fears over her positions on key constitutional issues during her confirmation hearings for the seat left vacant by Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
