MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS October 13 - October 19, 2020 THE WEEK IN BRIEF Click Here to Watch The Missile Defense Mondays Video On Tuesday, Russia started upgrading its S-400 and S-300 air defense systems. The upgraded systems are set to include new missile types as well as increase their range and accuracy. Also on Tuesday, it was reported that Russia Oryol nuclear-powered submarine had hit a target using a Granit anti-ship cruise missile while submerged. The strike took place during the Barents Sea drills and came as the submarine practiced a series of anti-submarine warfare and mine countermeasure exercises. On Wednesday, it was reported that Azerbaijan had destroyed missile launch sites in Armenia. That same day, it was reported by the Armenian Defense Ministry that the Artsakh Defense Army had shot down an Azerbaijani SU-25 attack jet. On Thursday, Iranian state media reported that missiles fired by Armenia and Azerbaijan had landed in two villages in Iran's East Azerbaijan province. One civilian was injured and Iran issued a warning to the two countries, stating that Iran may involve itself in the conflict if missiles cross the border again. On Saturday, the U.S. condemned Turkey for its Friday test of a Russian-built S-400 system. MISSILE DEFENDER OF THE WEEK Captain Samuel Keller Capt Keller is currently assigned as a Senior Intelligence Duty Officer (SIDO) and Team Chief with the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Division (ISRD), 611th Air Operations Center (611 AOC) at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. He leads a ten-member 24/7 Indications and Warning team that drives real-time analysis, safeguarding Alaskan and U.S. aerospace integrity and sovereignty for over 1.4 million square miles, as well as supporting the decision cycle for the Chief of Combat Operations and the Commander of Alaskan NORAD Region (ANR). Capt Keller is from Dayton, Ohio and commissioned through Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps from Wright State University in 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. In 2012, Capt Keller completed the Missile Launch Officer Initial Qualification Training Course for the Minute Man III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile weapon system and subsequently the Air Force Intelligence Officer Initial Skills Training Course in 2013. He has served at the 42d Attack Squadron (42ATKS) at Creech Air Force Base (AFB), Nevada, the U.S. Air Force’s first operational MQ-9 Reaper Squadron and has led intelligence support in Operations INHERENT RESOLVE (OIR), JUKEBOX LOTUS (OJL), and ODYSSEY RESOLVE (OOR). Capt Keller was also assigned to the 1st Air Force (1AF) at Tyndall AFB, Florida where he assisted the Defense Support to Civil Authorities (DSCA) during three hurricanes and helped to reestablish capabilities for the Continental NORAD Region (CONR), following the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. Capt Keller’s next assignment is as a student in U.S. Air Force Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training (SUPT) at Laughlin AFB, Texas.
