Biden/Harris Supporters Rally Weekly in Wilmington

There was a party atmosphere Saturday afternoon as a mask-wearing crowd gathered at the corner of Military Cutoff and Eastwood roads to show their support for the Biden/Harris presidential ticket and other Democratic office seekers. The group has been gathering at the northeast corner of the intersection near Starbucks for the last several weeks. Rock music played through a loudspeaker as rally goers waved to passing motorists who honked in support.

The Biden/Harris group easily outnumbered a gathering of Trump/Pence supporters at the opposite side of the intersection. The rallies were fueled by grassroots supporters who met in a Facebook group. Heather Cwiklinski said she noticed the mini-Trump rally a few weeks ago and decided she needed to respond. "I said there's got to be more people like me out there who are backing Biden," she said. Her first trip to the corner included her and a few friends, "then it just kept growing, " she said.

The Biden/Harris rallies are to continue each Saturday afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. for two more weeks leading up to the election. The Republicans across the street will probably be out too.

One-Stop Voting Continues Through October 31

(From the New Hanover County Board of Elections) One-stop early voting (commonly known as “early voting”) allows any registered voter to cast a ballot in person on select days prior to Election Day. One-Stop voting allows voters an opportunity to vote when it best suits their individual schedules.  For the 2020 General Election, the 17 days of early voting started October 15 and will end Saturday, October 31. During early voting, voters may cast a ballot at any early voting site in their county. This is different from Election Day when registered voters must vote at their assigned precinct. Residents who are not yet registered may register and vote the same day during One-Stop voting. Identification and proof of residency will be required to register at early voting.

There are nine sites (click here for a map) scattered around the county. Voting hours are 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. There will be extended weekend hours on Saturday, October 31, last day of One-Stop Voting when the voting sites will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Click here for a printable document listing the times and locations for One-Stop Voting. Click here for more details about One-Stop Voting.

Also if you have a mail-in ballot, you can still use it to vote. To avoid mailing delays, we recommend that you drop it off at the Board of Elections (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday) or at an early voting site during their regular hours. And remember that you can use BallotTrax to check on your absentee ballot here.

Bringing 4,000 Film Jobs Back Among Priorities for State Senator Harper Peterson

Harper Peterson Jr. was elected to the 9th District seat in the North Carolina Senate in 2018 and is running for reelection. Harper grew up on a farm in Huntington, NY, sharing a modest home with his parents, five siblings, and grandparents. Upon graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Harper volunteered as an English teacher in Thailand before moving to New Hanover County in the ‘70s. Harper is married, has five children, and two grandchildren and he and his wife Plunkett have been business partners in several local businesses for 35 years.

Harper served on the Wilmington City Council from 1995-1999,  as Wilmington Mayor from 2001-2003, and is a founding member of Cape Fear River Watch and Clean Cape Fear.

Harper spent most of his life, as a citizen and an elected official, advocating for the environment, sustainable growth, and equal opportunity for all of our citizens. He is running for re-election to continue the fight for clean water and air, access to affordable healthcare, a well-funded public education system, and to bring the film industry back to Wilmington, with over 4,000 high-paying skilled jobs.

NHCDP Office Now Has Signs and Office Hours 6 Days

The New Hanover County Democratic Party office received a lot of Biden Harris signs this weekend and also Cooper signs and other down ballot candidates.

The office is at 5401 New Centre Drive, Wilmington will now be staffed on Monday through Saturday from noon to 2:00 p.m. We will use the office primarily for pick up and drop off of yard signs, blue ballots and similar items. We do not anticipate scheduling meetings there. Our office phone number is (910) 805-5703.  Please wear a mask and observe social distancing. One visitor at a time in the office. Others, please wait in the hall.

We received an unexpectedly large number of 4 x 8 foot Biden/Harris signs, and would appreciate your help finding them good homes. If you know a Biden/Harris supporter with property on a highly visible street who might be willing to accept such a sign on their property, please let us know. Also, if you would like to help install the signs, we need one or more volunteers with trucks.
