NCOSE Director of Government Relations Testifies in Front of Bipartisan Task Force ([link removed])

Dr. Eleanor Gaetan, NCOSE Director of Government Relations, testified in front of the Bipartisan Task Force to End Sexual Violence. The task force, which includes Representatives Annie Kuster (D-NH), Susan Davis (D-CA), Dave Joyce (R-OH), and John Katko (R-NY), was holding a virtual roundtable on addressing human trafficking.

Dr. Gaetan suggested four areas of focus where improvement is needed and Congress can act:

1. Acknowledge who is most harmed—Marginal communities, especially women and girls of color;

2. Reduce the demand for commercial sex as the only real primary prevention—Make male sex buyers accountable;

3. Stop relying on victims to prosecute sex trafficking cases;

4. Don't let digital platforms off the hook: CDA230 reform is essential.

We are encouraged by the bipartisan interest and support surrounding the issue of sexual exploitation and that people are coming together in defense of those at risk. In these turbulent times, we have hope that all will unite around this cause to protect and prevent sexual abuse and exploitation.

How COVID-19 Has Impacted Sexual and Domestic Violence in Africa and the USA ([link removed]) 

The focus of world governments and public health officials has mainly been to curtail the COVID-19 pandemic, however the public health harms of sexual and domestic violence have increased in its wake and have not been addressed as specifically.

The pandemic also poses adverse risks for victims of commercialized sexual exploitation. Many direct services and exit opportunities for victims have been cut off, though many are in dire need of assistance.

The Stories of the Survivors Represented in Charleston v. State of Nevada ([link removed])

Bekah Charleston survived.

After 10 years of sexual servitude, Bekah escaped with the help of church and federal authorities.

Now she leads national efforts to prevent the exploitation that she endured.

With Charleston v. State of Nevada, Bekah is taking her efforts to court.

On December 9, 2020 the NCOSE Law Center will argue on behalf of her and Angela Delgado-Williams, just two of the many sex trafficking survivors of Nevada's system.

Nevada's pro-prostitution law conflicts with federal laws that ban sex trafficking, and violates the Thirteenth Amendment's ban on any form of involuntary servitude.

Remembering the Legacy of Robert Cahill ([link removed])

The movement to end sexual exploitation lost a great champion recently.

Robert Cahill is remembered for reinvigorating NCOSE eleven years ago when it was facing an uncertain future. He recruited new staff and board members, and infused the organization with more than sufficient financial resources to thrive.

Bob served as chairman of the NCOSE board for nearly 30 years.

He was a dedicated and selfless philanthropist, to whom we are so thankful!
