Dear John,

Why The Quiz questions should be polarizing, and how our new quiz statements achieve that.

President's Message

A few months ago, we announced our intent to bring The Quiz into 2020 ([link removed][UNIQID]) . Now, that effort has become a reality. The Quiz is 2020 ready and updated for the presidential election!

It's also important that The Quiz have integrity and produce reliable results.

For one thing, The Quiz is popular in high school and college classrooms. Thousands of students take it each month. We want that to continue and expand.

Moreover, when The Quiz gets shared at a booth or in an online forum, there's usually someone who suggests we "pushed" them to a libertarian result.

The best way to make The Quiz accurate, from the Quiz-taker’s perspective, is to make the questions polarizing. A libertarian would agree; an authoritarian would disagree. Where a progressive would agree, a conservative would disagree - and vice versa.

For these reasons...

We commissioned two econometricians to conduct a thorough statistical analysis. From that, we determined that three questions no longer contributed to an accurate result and that the new questions (below) did a better job.

We also surveyed users. We asked them if the results matched their expectations. Overwhelmingly, they said YES.

If someone you know suggests that The Quiz is biased, let them know that we’re continually testing and surveying our audience to ensure that The Quiz is as accurate and as valid as possible.

Here are the three UPDATED questions and their results so far...

Question A: Government should not target, detain, and deport undocumented workers.

Agreement with this statement, should be predictive of being more progressive or libertarian. Disagreement should lean towards conservative and authoritarian.

* Progressive agreement 79%. Libertarian agreement 55%.
* Conservative disagreement 95%. Authoritarian disagreement 79%.

Agreement with these next two statements should be predictive of being more conservative or libertarian. Disagreement should lean towards progressive and authoritarian.

Questions B: Taxpayers should NOT be responsible for student loan debt.

* Conservative agreement 90%. Libertarian agreement 89%.
* Progressive disagreement 59%. Authoritarian disagreement 70%.

Question C: Government should not be responsible for providing healthcare.

* Conservative agreement 79%. Libertarian agreement 60%.
* Progressive disagreement 95%. Authoritarian disagreement 70%.

As you can see, these are sufficiently polarizing results.

How would you score?
