Chronic absenteeism puts students at risk for academic failure with effects that can last a lifetime and negatively impact education, health, financial stability, and employment. NASN has released the School Nurse-Led Active Surveillance of Chronic Absenteeism Manual to provide procedures and resources to support school nurses’ important work in this area. This resource guides school nurses in addressing health-related absences. NASN also has a position paper available on its website on chronic absenteeism. BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights Share Your COVID Experience On behalf of NASN, the CDC Foundation and Deloitte Consulting, in consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we would like to invite frontline school nurses to share their experiences regarding schools during this COVID-19 pandemic. TAKE SURVEY Paid advertisement School Nurse-Led Surveillance of Chronic Absenteeism Manual Available Chronic absenteeism is defined as a student having missed more than 10% of a school year, or more than two days per month, and students who are chronically absent are at risk for academic failure and dropout. The National Association of School Nurse’s School Nurse-Led Active Surveillance of Chronic Absenteeism Manual provides a standardized, evidence-based procedure and resources to support school nurses’ important role in addressing health related absences. Information includes why addressing chronic absenteeism is critical, how to gain school-wide support, and tools for implementing the procedure. There is no cost to access the manual or its accompanying resources. CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM MANUAL Scholarship Funds Post Baccalaureate Certification or Graduate Degrees NASN members pursuing a post baccalaureate certification or graduate degree may apply for this scholarship now through October 15, 2020. SCHOLARSHIP See Who is Running in the 2021 NASN Election Become familiar with the candidates stepping forward to lead NASN. All candidates have completed the nominating committee process. In the upcoming election, NASN members will select a president-elect, secretary/treasurer, and a nominating committee member. The election will be conducted online from March 15, 2021 to April 15, 2021. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Online Skills-Based Program Helps School Nurses Apply Framework Skills-based Approach to Managing Chronic Health Conditions in Schools is an interactive program geared toward helping school nurses apply the NASN Framework for 21st Century School Nursing PracticeTM to the management of chronic health conditions in schools. The program is part of the CDC-funded NASN project Collaboration to Support Students with Chronic Health Conditions, and was originally an in-person program at the Healthy Schools Academy conference held at the CDC in Atlanta in February 2018. The course is available online and free for NASN members and non-members. LEARN MORE Opportunities & Networking NASN2021 Abstract Submissions Due By October 12 Submit Your NASN2021 Abstract Now! The NASN2021 Oral and Poster abstract submission form is officially open. Please note these important updates. Your submission will now include Knowledge Questions and Rationale. You will be asked about the possibility of presenting virtually. There will be ONE call for submissions instead of separate calls for oral and poster abstracts. The detailed guidelines in the submission form will explain these updates. If you have an abstract for a breakout, general or poster session, please consider submitting. Begin with the call for abstract submission details on NASN.org. NASN looks forward to receiving a diverse group of submissions to fill out the conference schedule. NOTE: If you were selected to present at NASN2020 but deferred to NASN2021, you will need to enter the submission platform to answer updated questions. Please also take this time to update the entire submission if needed.
