Friend,
We hit the streets hard this weekend in support of Bernie Sanders!
California’s a winnable race for the Sanders campaign, and we believe that if Bernie takes the state on Super Tuesday, then he’ll also take the White House in the general, put an end to Trump’s madness, and begin to lay the groundwork for a more peaceful and prosperous future for the 99% of Americans who have suffered under decades of neoliberal and conservative policies.
Join our Bernie 2020 Working Group today. <[link removed]>
We’ll also be hosting Debate Watch Parties and fundraisers for the next Democratic debate, this Thursday, September 12.
RSVP for debate watch parties for our Central <[link removed]>, Valley <[link removed]>, and Westside <[link removed]> branches today.
Note: the Central debate viewing party at the Cat & Fiddle in Hollywood will double as a DSA-LA fundraiser. Tickets are $15 and include a drink, a sausage roll, or chips. Please purchase yours in advance, though we’ll also accept payments at the door.
Terrifying Climate Realities Got You Down?
Then fight back. This week, the California State Senate will vote on whether or not to approve #AB857, the Public Banking Act.
Currently, the state of California is investing millions of dollars with terrible companies, including major polluters and other Wall St. goons. A public bank for the state would allow its citizens to have a voice in how their tax money gets used, and it’d allow us the opportunity to divest from corporations that are hurtling our planet towards collapse within our lifetimes.
So please do this today: Find your State Senator: findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov
Google their office number. Call it. Tell the staffer your name and your zip code.
Then say, “As a constituent, I’m urging the Senator to support AB857, the Public Banking Act.”
This vote could happen as soon as tomorrow. Please do call.
NOT ENOUGH CLIMATE JUSTICE FOR YOU?
Join us tomorrow, September 10, 9:00 a.m. at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s board meeting at 111 N. Hope St. to demand a just transition to clean energy.
The LADWP is stalling <[link removed]> on their promised implementation of a major solar project. Join us in telling them to hurry it up.
These folks aren’t used to people showing up to their meetings, so your presence will definitely send a message. RSVP <[link removed]>.
ALSO TOMORROW: SHOW UP AT CITY HALL AGAINST LAMC 41.18d
Join our Housing & Homelessness Committee tomorrow, Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. at City Hall to speak out against this law, which amounts to apartheid.
LA City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell is working with City Attorney and Mayoral aspirant Mike Feuer to jam a terrifying revised law through City Council called LAMC 41.18d. The law would make it illegal to sit, lay, or sleep inside or within 500 feet of a park, school, homeless shelter, and on. There are even provisions in the law that make it illegal to speak or behave in a way that might be perceived as threatening. <[link removed]> The point of the law is to make public space virtually inaccessible to the unhoused and lay the groundwork for their disappearance. The original version of the law was found to be unconstitutional and thus largely unenforceable - making this an attempt to work around that ruling.
Last week we turned out en masse to the Homelessness and Poverty Committee to voice our opposition. Tomorrow, Tuesday, we continue the pressure. Show up at City Hall at 10:00 a.m, go to room 340, sign up for public comment, and speak out against LAMC 41.18d to help us shine a light on all its heinousness.
The DSA-LA Political Education Committee is proud to present ‘Imperialism: A Study Series.’ RSVP for it today <[link removed]>!
This four-part series kicks off on September 19th; <[link removed]> new and long-time comrades and interested community members are invited to attend this series designed to examine the relationship between imperialism and capitalism, and ongoing debates therein. Political education is not only an entry point to united class struggle, but a site to return to again and again for guidance in our anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist organizing—download the course reader <[link removed]> and RSVP <[link removed]> for the series today!
And before the series kicks off, join us for a phonebank to invite comrades to the event <[link removed]>, and a special talk with Max Elbaum <[link removed]>, organizer and author of Revolution in the Air: Sixties radicals turn to Lenin, Mao, and Che. On September 14 at 1pm <[link removed]>, we’ll share discussion inspired by this retrospective analysis on the New Communist Movement—one that promises valuable insights from this leftist tendency and can be applied towards our anti-imperialist work in DSA today.

UPCOMING CHAPTER MEETINGS IN SEPTEMBER
Our next chapter-wide branch meetings are set for thisSaturday, September 14th3:30 - 5:30 p.m. This is our first assembly as a chapter since the national convention in Atlanta, so we’ll take some time to learn about the national priorities that were decided on with our chapter’s delegates, and discuss how to implement them together.

RSVP for the Central <[link removed]>, Valley <[link removed]>, and Westside <[link removed]> Meet & Greet.
And if you’re the guardian of a little one, RSVP for Child Watch <[link removed]> if you’d like to engage in the meeting more independently. We have volunteers, toys and activities, and a whole little setup at each of our branch meetings so the child that you’re caring for will have companionship, activities, and supervision while you’re perhaps more free to participate in the meeting. And alternatively: kids are more than welcome to join their guardians in our meetings. Have them sit with you if it’s best, DSA is kid friendly!
And if you’d like to get involved in our Child Watch project, or you’re a returning volunteer and want to volunteer at any of the branch meetings above, click here! <[link removed]>
