Burma is on the cusp of a further backslide, continued stagnation in democratic principles, or the transition to a real democracy for all. With a greater partnership between Burma’s people and the United States, Burma can achieve its full potential to be a free and democratic country.

This month, two members of Burma’s military confessed <[link removed]> to participating in what the U.N. and international prosecutors call a genocidal campaign against the Rohingya people. In a recent Q&A for the Bush Institute’s Democracy Talks series, Wai Wai Nu, a Rohingya activist and 2015 Bush Institute Liberty and Leadership Scholar, describes the challenges to democracy and human rights in her home country.

Burma — already notorious for the world’s longest ongoing civil war — now owns the distinction of having the world’s longest internet shutdown. The Bush Institute’s Jieun Pyun wrote a piece for The Diplomat urging the international community to put pressure on the Burmese government to restore internet access.

Meet Our Scholars from Burma <[link removed]>
The Bush Institute’s Liberty and Leadership program equips young Burmese scholars with the knowledge they need to lead during a democratic transition. The class of 2020 will graduate virtually from the program this October.
