Doorway to Democracy
Burma's 2020 election
The United States isn’t the only country in the middle of a contentious election season. Burma is on the cusp of a further backslide, continued stagnation in democratic principles, or the transition to a real democracy for all. With a greater partnership between Burma’s people and the United States, Burma can achieve its full potential to be a free and democratic country.

New Report: How the U.S. Can Support Burma Now

This week, the Bush Institute released a report by Senior Program Manager Jieun Pyun that provides recommendations for the U.S. and the international community on how they can support Burma during this election cycle so that the Burmese people can gain the democracy they deserve.

The Rohingya Crisis

This month, two members of Burma’s military confessed to participating in what the U.N. and international prosecutors call a genocidal campaign against the Rohingya people. In a recent Q&A for the Bush Institute’s Democracy Talks series, Wai Wai Nu, a Rohingya activist and 2015 Bush Institute Liberty and Leadership Scholar, describes the challenges to democracy and human rights in her home country.

End Burma's Internet Shutdown

Burma — already notorious for the world’s longest ongoing civil war — now owns the distinction of having the world’s longest internet shutdown. The Bush Institute’s Jieun Pyun wrote a piece for The Diplomat urging the international community to put pressure on the Burmese government to restore internet access.

Meet Our Scholars from Burma

The Bush Institute’s Liberty and Leadership program equips young Burmese scholars with the knowledge they need to lead during a democratic transition. The class of 2020 will graduate virtually from the program this October.
