Friend—







Last Wednesday’s grand jury decision not to charge the police officers responsible for the murder of Breonna Taylor, and instead only indicting one officer for wanton endangerment, reaffirms what many of us already knew—structural racism, when articulated with American capitalism, results in a justice system that routinely values property over the lives of Black and Brown people.



Simultaneously, we continue to see the rise of fascist authoritarianism. Whether it is the President seeking to undermine the electoral process or militarized police violence against those rising up in the name of justice, spaces of democratic participation are under siege.



Of course, these problems are in no way isolated to Louisville or the executive branch. In Detroit, as we march in solidarity with Breonna Taylor and seek to bring about structural change in our own city, we are met with a police chief who goes on national television to spout right-wing authoritarianism <[link removed]> and elected officials who refuse to hold him accountable. Understandably, this has led to rage, disillusion, and exhaustion on the left.



However, this is not the time to give in. We must continue to look to our comrades locally, around the country, and around the world. We must meet this racism and authoritarianism with broad, democratic coalition building and collective action as we organize into November and beyond. We must put forth a vision of a political future free injustice of all kinds.



Another world is possible, and we must be central in building that world.







We are in the middle of the greatest economic and public health crisis coupled with one of the largest social justice movements in our lifetime—we can either build a mass movement together to win a transformative response to this moment, or we can sit back and allow the ruling class to profit while the working class loses everything and more Black and Brown lives are lost.



Around the nation, people like you are uniting with the DSA to fight for the working class, to fight for the American working two jobs, struggling with losses of healthcare and homes, to fight for those being beaten and murdered by police. As our voices grow in unity, we only get stronger. If you’ve been thinking about joining DSA, now is the time!

Tomorrow we will be joined by Yusef Shakur, Detroit DSA member and founder of Community Movement Builders. This week's topic is the Black radical tradition in Detroit and the history of Black labor organizing in the city during the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Yusef will cover the League of Revolutionary Black Workers, RUM organizing in Detroit auto plants, and the community impacts. Join us for this talk and the following discussion.

October 1-5th, Liberation Festival is a weekend of 100% free workshops, talks, trainings, kickbacks & cookouts sharing skills to defend our neighborhoods from eviction and police violence, and organize our power as neighbors and Detroiters to build a free & independent future built by and for us.
