Friend — gun violence is a scourge on our community and our country. In fact, Brooklyn is among a long list of communities that have seen spikes in gun violence this year. That’s why as your leader in Congress, Yvette has worked tirelessly to make these all too frequent acts of violence less common.

Earlier this year, she co-sponsored and passed the Bipartisan Background Checks Act to make it harder for those with a history of violence to get there hands on a gun. Sadly, all these months later, the bill is STILL waiting on Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans to hold a vote on it.

But just because folks in Washington refuse to act, that doesn’t mean our fight for stricter gun reform has to stop. If we want to save lives, we need to speak loudly, together, and demand action. That’s why we’re emailing you today about red flag laws.

People don’t become violent overnight, there are often signs that their friends, family, and loved ones see before a person commits a violent act. Red flag laws empower people speak up when they see warning signs of violence.

These laws are an effective way to temporarily block weapons sales to those who pose an extreme risk of committing violence in their community and give law enforcement adequate time to respond and prevent tragedies. They keep guns out of the hands of those who pose a risk to themselves and others.

These laws save lives, but we know it will take immense public pressure to make sure every community has access to this critical gun violence prevention measure.
