November Ballot Recommendations
Thursday, October 1, 6:30pm to 8:00pm

With ballots dropping just a few days after October 1, we will be meeting to go over all the propositions and local races with the purpose of making a DSA SB voter guide. California elections are always confusing, so this will be a good opportunity to get to know what’s on the ballot while we vote on recommendations to make our positions clear to fellow Democratic Socialists in Santa Barbara.

To help with our recommendations, CSEA 289 (union representing SBCC staff) released their endorsements for SBCC board. Here is what they had to say in a press release:

The California School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapter 289 voted today to endorse Robert Miller (Area 2), Erin Guereña (Area 3), and Anna Everett (Area 4) as candidates for the Governing Board of the Santa Barbara Community College District.

“These candidates best reflect the values of SBCC, an institution that welcomes all students and is committed to fostering an equitable, inclusive, respectful, participatory, and supportive community dedicated to the success of every student,” said members of CSEA’s Political Action Committee. The endorsements were made after a comprehensive review of each candidate’s election statement as well as their responses to a questionnaire soliciting additional information on their experience, qualifications, and perspectives on critical issues facing the college. The group cited Miller, Guereña, and Everett’s support for diversity, equity, and inclusion work, their support for classified staff and shared governance, as well as the priority they placed on addressing concerns about systemic racism and campus climate as key reasons for earning the chapter’s endorsement.

Members of the chapter also voiced support of Proposition 15, which has been endorsed by CSEA on a statewide level. If passed, the proposition will reclaim 12 billion dollars a year for California’s public schools and services by closing a commercial property tax loophole in Proposition 13.
