We're stunned and saddened by the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but we're also so grateful and inspired to see that people have decided to channel those feelings into a weekend of action. The stakes of this election that we didn't think could get higher suddenly have. We can't count on Republicans to play fair, but accepting something is a forgone conclusion is how it becomes one. We have to fight. We have 44 days to win by the biggest margin we can. National Voter Registration Day is coming up Tuesday (9/22) and we know it’s essential to get young voters registered and make their voices heard this November. We asked one of our super volunteers from the Adopt a State community who just turned 18 to help us make the case for why we need your help. -VSA
When I celebrated my 18th birthday last week, it was a little different than I expected. Because of social distancing, I couldn’t celebrate with friends in person, but I did get the best birthday present: a Vote Save America Adopt a State virtual weekend of action in my home state of Georgia. I was so excited to see my fellow digital organizers in the “field” last weekend! It’s given me so much hope that we can finally defeat the voter suppression of Gov. Brian Kemp.
I always planned to register to vote as soon as I could (which in Georgia is actually six months before you turn 18!), but unfortunately among my fellow newly eligible voters (18-19 year olds) in Georgia, voter registration is down 8% from 2016 levels ([link removed]) . The good news is voter registration among 18-24 year olds is up 28% from where it was in 2016. Georgia is an increasingly young, diverse state and that makes me hopeful for turning it blue in my lifetime (maybe as soon as this year!)
In my adopted state of Pennsylvania, things aren’t looking as good. Youth voter registration among 18-24 year olds is down 10% from 2016, and is even worse among newly eligible voters, where registration is down 34% from November 2016 levels.
Gen Z will account for 10% of the voting population in 2020, compared to 4% in 2018—that’s as many as 24 million votes, if we can get people registered. ([link removed])
Young people, the youth, kids, whatever you want to call us—we’re paying close attention to politics, active in social movements, and very aware that the 2020 election will have a huge impact on our daily lives and our futures. But we also face additional barriers to voter registration, especially because COVID-19 means fewer opportunities for in-person events and organizing. The big gap is when it comes to information and outreach from campaigns: For example, more than 36% of people ages 18-21 said they did not know whether they could register to vote online in their state. Young voters need help getting the right information to make our voices heard at the ballot box.
I’ve done my part by holding a voter registration drive (before the pandemic) to register every eligible student at my hometown high school. Now that we are all stuck in our homes, I've been limited to digital organizing and reaching out to all of my friends via social media and Zoom (the Z in Gen Z actually stands for Zoomer, if you didn’t know). I’ve gotten over 30 people I know to register to vote, adopt a state, and take action to save our democracy! Now I'm calling on you to do the same.
So how can you help? If you don’t have any young unregistered voters in your life, don’t worry, you don’t have to go on TikTok to find them. On Tuesday, September 22, Vote Save America is partnering with NextGen America to help register young voters in 11 battleground states. Can I count on you to join me and sign up for a shift to help reach voters we can still get registered before upcoming deadlines?
VOLUNTEER ON 9/22 ([link removed])
They'll provide the script, calling platform, training, and access to a virtual field office where you can connect with other NextGen volunteers. You can also join NextGen America for a strategy session on Monday to review the latest polling on why it’s so important to do this outreach. ([link removed])
Young voters are essential to fixing the damage caused by the current administration and make our progressive values the reality. Let’s go change the future.
Thanks so much for doing your part to help!
