Powerful Nor’easter Leaves Flooding, Power Outages and Coastal Damage Across
the Northeast
The slow-moving coastal storm flooded communities in New York and New Jersey,
knocked out power to tens of thousands and produced damaging winds and
dangerous surf. Some rain and coastal impacts are expected to continue into
Monday.

A powerful nor’easter battered parts of the Northeast over the weekend with
heavy rain, coastal flooding, strong winds and dangerous surf.
Some coastal neighborhoods in New York and New Jersey flooded deeply enough
that residents used kayaks and canoes to move through streets where parked
vehicles were partially submerged.

THE DAMAGE Flooding, falling trees and power outages spread across several
states. At least one person was killed in Brooklyn after being struck by a
falling tree, while tens of thousands of customers lost power in New York and
Connecticut.
COASTAL FLOODING WAS A MAJOR THREAT
New Jersey's shoreline absorbed some of the storm's most visible damage.
High water covered roads in coastal communities, while large waves and
repeated tidal cycles eroded beaches and pushed water over seawalls and
walkways.

WIND THREAT Peak gusts on the Jersey Shore exceeded 60 mph. Strong onshore
winds also drove waves and coastal water toward communities from the
Mid-Atlantic into New England.
POWER OUTAGES FOLLOWED
More than 40,000 customers in New York and roughly 30,000 in Connecticut were
without power Sunday morning.
Early-season wind events can be especially disruptive because many trees
still carry their leaves, increasing the surface area exposed to strong gusts
and placing additional stress on branches and power lines.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency in
affected areas. Some low-lying New Jersey communities also urged residents to
leave ahead of the worst coastal flooding.
THE STORM IS WEAKENING — BUT NOT GONE
By Sunday, the storm had begun gradually weakening around the New York and
New Jersey region, with some of the strongest coastal impacts easing.
But the National Weather Service said the broader system would continue
producing strong wind gusts, coastal flooding, rip currents and heavy rain
across parts of the Northeast through Monday evening as it moves toward the
Gulf of Maine.

INFRASTRUCTURE TEST The storm is hitting one of the country's most densely
populated and infrastructure-heavy regions. Flooded roads, disrupted power
service, coastal erosion and transportation delays can create economic effects
well beyond the immediate shoreline.
AN EXPENSIVE WINTER IS ALREADY LOOMING
The storm also arrives just as Northeast households are preparing for
potentially much higher winter heating costs.

Roughly four million households in the Northeast use heating oil, which is
closely linked to diesel prices. Energy analysts say current conditions could
leave some households facing prices near $6 a gallon this winter.
That does not make the nor’easter an energy-market event. But storm-related
property repairs and power disruptions are arriving as household energy budgets
are already under greater pressure.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTION An unusually early nor’easter does not by itself
establish a climate trend. Nor’easters can occur in early autumn, and the
available forecasts for this storm do not establish that record ocean
temperatures directly caused this specific event.

THE SIGNAL The storm's peak coastal damage may be easing, but flooding,
power restoration and transportation disruptions can continue long after the
strongest winds move away.
