Hi everyone,

This week, our chapter calendar is fairly quiet, as we all gear up for the upcoming storm. Our chapter's Direct Service Committee has put together a 2020 Hurricane Season Survey for our membership. This will make it a little easier for us to check on each other, identify needs, and distribute resources where possible during and after storms. Please fill out this survey and please stay safe ([link removed]) !

And save the date - our next General Meeting is September 26th at 2 PM. These are the most important meetings our chapter holds each month! The agenda is still being prepared, but we will likely have some lively discussions on our chapter's approach to electoral politics, and we will hear a report back from the Green New Deal Strategy Summit. Our General Membership Meetings are the highest decision making bodies in our whole chapter. Lastly, many of our members are continuing to travel to Lake Charles and participate in Hurricane Laura relief work. National DSA Upcoming Events

Black Health. Black Liberation. Why do we have racial health disparities? Uprisings across the country are bringing attention to the injustices of police brutality and systemic racism. But how do movements like Medicare for All meet this moment, especially in the time of COVID-19? In this series, we’ll speak to activists and organizers fighting at the intersection of healthcare and Black liberation. On our second panel, “Why do we have racial health inequities?,” Dr. Susan Rogers, President of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) will be joined by her colleagues for a discussion about the historical, economic, and social determinants of health. System Change: Capitalism, Socialism, and the Solidarity Economy.
With the COVID-19 pandemic upending our existing way of life, the possibility of organizing towards a post-capitalist transformation appears well within our grasp. In this session, Julie Matthaei and Emily Kawano will offer their insight and experience on the infrastructure of a solidarity economy centering people, planet, and placemaking rather than profit.
