Dear John,

At the American Immigration Council, we know that welcoming immigrants is about creating communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute, and belong. That's why the Center for Inclusion & Belonging developed the Belonging Barometer [[link removed]] , a free, research-backed tool that helps communities measure belonging and identify practical ways to strengthen it for all residents.

Our new Belonging Barometer 2026 study offers one of the most comprehensive looks yet at how Americans experience belonging in their local communities and where there is room to grow. The research found that while most Americans feel safe and comfortable where they live, 61% do not report a strong sense of belonging, and only 24% believe they can influence decisions that affect their communities. These findings underscore that belonging is about having meaningful opportunities to participate, build relationships, and help shape the communities we call home.

For immigration advocates, legal service providers, and community organizations, these insights matter. Stronger belonging leads to stronger communities, helping newcomers and longtime residents alike build trust, civic participation, and lasting connections.
