iOS 27 Arrives Monday. Every iPhone Back to the iPhone 11 Gets It. Here Is
What Actually Changes.

Apple's next major iPhone software update lands September 14, four days
before the iPhone 18 Pro reaches customers. The update extends all the way back
to the iPhone 11 — but its most advanced AI features require considerably newer
hardware.

MONDAY 9.14 iOS 27 → 4 DAYS FRIDAY 9.18 iPhone 18 Pro
Apple confirmed that iOS 27 will be released on Monday, September 14, four
days before the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max become available on Friday,
September 18. The software supports the same broad range of devices as iOS 26,
extending back to the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, as well
as the second-generation iPhone SE and later.

OLDEST SUPPORTED iPhone 11 introduced in 2019 Seven years of major iOS
compatibility. But compatibility with iOS 27 does not mean every supported
iPhone receives every feature.
That distinction is particularly important this year. iPhone 11 through
iPhone 14 models can install iOS 27, but Apple's new Apple Intelligence and
Siri AI capabilities require an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, an iPhone
16-series model, or a newer supported device. In other words, the operating
system reaches back to 2019, while its headline AI experience does not.

WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGES

01 Siri AI On compatible hardware, Siri gains stronger personal-context
awareness, the ability to work across apps, understand what is on screen and
answer broader questions using web knowledge.

02 Smarter writing and images Apple expands Writing Tools, introduces
stronger AI-assisted editing in Photos, upgrades Image Playground and adds
Spatial Reframing for supported Apple Intelligence devices.

03 Health gets a major redesign The Health app gains an Insights view that
brings together heart, sleep, readiness, fitness, vitals and other personal
health information in a more adaptive interface.

04 Hundreds of smaller system changes iOS 27 also adds new child-safety
controls, performance improvements, enhanced Maps features, AirPods Custom EQ,
GymKit support on iPhone and upgrades throughout Apple's built-in apps.
For compatible newer devices, the largest software change is the next
generation of Apple Intelligence. Siri AI can draw on information from
messages, mail, photos and other apps, understand onscreen context, carry out
more actions across applications and handle more natural multi-step requests.
Writing Tools can draft and revise text in more places across the system, while
Photos and Image Playground gain additional generative and editing capabilities.

BIGGEST DIVIDE SAME iOS.
DIFFERENT AI. An iPhone 11 and an iPhone 18 Pro can both run iOS 27, but
their feature sets are increasingly separated by the hardware required to run
Apple's AI stack.
The redesigned Health app is another substantial part of the release. Its new
Insights tab brings together information including sleep, heart, fitness,
vitals and readiness data, using Apple Intelligence on supported hardware to
surface more personalized summaries. Apple is therefore using iOS 27 not only
to add standalone features but to make more of its existing apps adaptive to
the individual user's data.

WHAT REQUIRES NEW HARDWARE
Some of Apple's most notable announcements remain tied specifically to the
iPhone 18 Pro hardware. Apple Reference Image, for example, uses the Pro
model's new camera sensor to create a signed reference version of a photograph
that can later be compared with an edited image. iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27
provide the software infrastructure and APIs for viewing these reference
images, but capture requires the new hardware.

APPLE REFERENCE IMAGE Software support in iOS 27. Capture hardware on iPhone
18 Pro. The feature creates an unalterable reference image intended to help
viewers determine whether a photo has subsequently been edited.
Apple is also expanding its use of eSIM on the iPhone 18 Pro. eSIM-only
versions will be sold in the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico and several
additional markets, allowing Apple to use the space previously occupied by the
physical SIM tray for a larger battery. Those changes are hardware-specific,
while iOS 27 provides the software environment used to manage the digital
cellular connection.

MONDAY Software changes Existing compatible iPhones get iOS 27 before the
new Pro hardware reaches stores. FRIDAY Hardware changes iPhone 18 Pro adds
the A20 Pro, new camera hardware, Reference Image capture and other
device-specific features.

03 CORE NOTES Three things to know before Monday

01 iOS 27 keeps the iPhone 11 generation on Apple's current operating
system, extending major software compatibility to devices first released in
2019.

02 Apple Intelligence is much more restricted than iOS 27 itself. Siri AI
and the next-generation AI feature set require iPhone 15 Pro models or iPhone
16 and later.

03 The four-day gap between the software release and iPhone 18 Pro
availability means existing iPhone owners will begin using the new operating
system before Apple's new flagship hardware reaches customers.
