Dear John,

My thanks to the thousands of CAGW members and supporters who completed our 2017 Spring Critical Issues Survey. If you have not yet participated in the survey, *please click here to let your voice be heard* [ [link removed] ].

During last year's elections, President Trump and fiscally conservative candidates used CAGW's policy proposals to focus their campaigns on reversing decades of Washington's waste and mismanagement..

CAGW commissioned this Spring 2017 Critical Issues Survey to find out how CAGW members and supporters from across the country now feel about the important tax and spending issues facing our nation's decision-makers in order to help them fulfill the elections' mandate to slash the bloated federal budget.

The results provide insights on what issues Americans like you, John, want Congress and the President to focus on; what you think are the biggest threats to America's financial future; and how you rate the President's and Congress' performance so far on fiscal matters, like deficit spending and taxes..

Here are some highlights of the findings:
* We asked what you believe to be the top threats to *America's economic security*, and 88 percent of respondents ranked the $20 trillion national debt first. Americans' dependency on government (85 percent) and runaway federal spending (83 percent) rounded out the top three.

* On *healthcare reform*, an overwhelming majority of you (78 percent) said that Obamacare should be repealed and replaced, while smaller numbers favored repeal only (14 percent) or making small changes to the existing healthcare system (5 percent). Less than 1 percent wanted Obamacare to remain in place without reforms.

* While protecting the homeland is one of the government's most important roles, the *defense budget* is bloated with more contractors than soldiers and is plagued with exorbitant cost overruns. Because of this, 93 percent of you said that President Trump should call for a comprehensive audit of the Department of Defense before more funds are pumped into the Pentagon.

* Congress and the President have already begun to grapple with major *tax and spending* issues during the first half of 2017. When asked how you grade President Trump and Congress so far on their performance with fiscal issues, President Trump received a B average, while Congress received a D.

* President Trump has vowed to push *tax and regulatory reform* to stimulate the economy, and 91 percent of you agreed that cutting the corporate tax rate and paring back the power of the regulatory state would spur economic growth and job creation.

* When we asked you which *cost-cutting measures* the President and Congress should act on first, repealing Obamacare was number one with 57 percent of the vote. Permanently banning earmarked spending came in second with 51 percent, followed by slashing corporate welfare (49 percent); cutting funding for the United Nations (48 percent); and enacting the Government Accountability Office's 544 recommendations to reduce fragmentation, overlap, and duplication in federal programs (44 percent).

My thanks again to the many CAGW members and supporters who completed this important survey. It is vitally important that CAGW knows your views on the important issues America faces so that we can ensure that our work continues to reflect your foremost concerns. What's more, your responses provide vital evidence that the demand for leaner, limited government is still going strong!

Please continue to stay connected, reach out, and share your thoughts with us by e-mail, or on *Facebook* [ [link removed] ] and *Twitter* [ [link removed] ].

Sincerely,

Thomas A. Schatz
President
