Dear Friend,

I am very excited to announce that Rashida Tlaib will be chairing and speaking at this year’s Douglass-Debs Fundraiser Dinner on October 5, 2019 from 6-9 pm at UAW Local 600 in Dearborn, Michigan. We are thrilled that Abdul El-Sayed will also be speaking.

We will be honoring Tameka Ramsey, of Pontiac Policy Council, and Nia Winston, of UNITE HERE Local 24, for their relentless activism on behalf of workers and the community.

Detroit DSA has held the Douglass-Debs Dinner for decades. Our main annual fundraiser, the event enables us to do trailblazing activism in the Detroit area. Over the last year or so, our Chapter fought tooth and nail to get progressives elected to office, started a DSA Night School in Southwest Detroit, founded a newspaper (The Detroit Socialist <[link removed]>), organized countless canvasses and town halls for Medicare for All and a Green New Deal, and raised funds for the Black Mother’s Day Bailout.

Our Chapter also led the way in resisting General Motors’ plant closures and layoffs, which affected several of our members. In January, we staged a successful protest at the annual Auto Show Charity Preview. We demanded the Poletown plant be taken back via eminent domain and put to public use, and called for bold economic reforms to “Make Detroit the Engine of the Green New Deal.” Our action brought together a remarkably diverse coalition of groups, including rank-and-file UAW and Unifor members, Brazilian trade unionists, and an array of local activists. Since then, we’ve been pushing aggressively for a Green New Deal for the Rust Belt and the broader Great Lakes region.

Join us for this year's Douglass-Debs dinner to celebrate how far we have come, and the work of activists in our community.

Food will be provided by Bandhu Gardens <[link removed]>, a Bangladeshi women’s catering co-op, and live music will be provided by our in-house People’s Marching Band.
