It's one of those things everyone does now and then — picking at your skin or cuticles, even though you know you're probably going to regret it. But for some kids, it becomes more than just a bad habit. When skin picking is a compulsion — something you can't stop even though it's embarrassing and disfiguring — it's called excoriation disorder ([link removed]).
This week on childmind.org ([link removed]) we explore excoriation disorder, which usually develops in teenagers. Skin picking can serve as a way to self-soothe or diffuse negative emotions, but it can lead to social isolation and depression. In treatment, kids learn to substitute other ways to deal with stress and painful emotions that don't involve hurting themselves.
