Pro Amore Dei Shelter Update

On behalf of shelter Director Ms. Leticia – thank you!!! Shelter residents were able to enjoy some delicious carnitas, beans and drinks. This is all because of your donations and support.

As an added treat, the kids were able to have some ice cream for dessert! It made them so happy!

Your generosity and support make days like this possible. It is invaluable during times as these.

It makes us all happy to see these migrant families enjoy comfort and treats. We are grateful that they're able to pay another month's rent and utilities.

¡Gracias!

Another migrant was released from detention!

Pascal is a 22-year-old Togolese asylum seeker who was detained for three months at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego. This migrant prison continues to have an extremely high number of COVID-positive cases; we are glad to have one less person exposed.

Being in detention is physically, mentally and psychologically challenging. Thankfully, Pascal and another asylum seeker became friends, and they were able to support one another. They were happy to be freed on the same night! They shared a nice meal and relaxed before Pascal headed to Georgia to live with his new sponsor.

We wish him the best on his new life and journey ahead! We are grateful to the fundraisers and all of the support that continues to make this program possible.

Let this story serve as a reminder of all the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and community members experiencing horrible conditions while in detention, simply for seeking safety and refuge in this country.

Pascal represents so many others being subject to racist and inhumane policies. Let's not forget the urgency of getting everyone out of the Otay Mesa Detention Center. This pandemic continues to be unforgiving, and we will not allow any more lives lost. Again, we thank you for your support and ask you to continue to help us make sure our folks are #FreeAndAlive ([link removed][UNIQID]) .

Water Drop Program

Prevention Through Deterrence was created with hot summer months in mind. The current construction and expansion of the border wall continues to carry on these same repressive ideas as over 25 years ago.

The canyons we have recently visited are some of the most remote and hardest treks one can attempt to make. When we are out there, we do our desert cleanup while leaving water and supplies. We also try our best to get a good understanding of how fresh the movement is through that particular area. We want to make sure we're leaving water and food where they are most needed.

Thank you to everyone on our team who continues to join us week after week, regardless of the weather. and putting their bodies on the line to do some good. We have not, and will not leave the desert. As long as people are crossing through, we’ll be there.

Since temperatures are still extreme, we are still only taking experienced Water Drop volunteers out. As soon as we can safely take new volunteers we will.

Keep on sharing our posts with friends and family. Keep on making donations, even if it's a small amount! This allows us to continue our work.

If you have any questions about Water Drops, reach out to Water Drop Program Co-Director James Cordero, [email protected].

Thank you for your continued support!

CALL TO ACTION!!!

At the beginning of this year, we rallied on behalf of Rocío Rebollar Gómez, mother of a U.S. Army officer, property and business owner, to stop her deportation after having lived in the U.S. for over 30 years. Having been deported before, she was not eligible for asylum despite the increased cartel violence in her home country. She had applied for a special permit and extension to stay in the U.S., and when she went to check in with ICE, she was detained and later deported.

This country’s policies continue to rip immigrnat families apart, even for those, like Ms. Rebollar, that are “model citizens".

Today we are asking for your help once more.

** Green Cards for Kids
------------------------------------------------------------

With our new Green Cards for Kids program, we are so lucky to be able to work with immigration attorney Fabiola Navarro who will be representing these children.

It is crucial that we help these children as they have already suffered enough abuse, neglect and/or abandonment.

With your continued support, we can help pay for the legal representation these children deserve in this critical time of their lives.

Please consider donating! No amount is too small!

1. Our Shelter Aid Program❤️: Especially now that we are unable to receive these items, we need your help to provide funds for groceries, hygiene products, utility bills, rent, clothes, etc.!

2. Familias Reunidas Bond Program👨‍👩‍👧: Given the severity of this outbreak, we NEED to get as many people out of the Otay Mesa Detention Center as we can. With your help we can post bond for more individuals! (Link in highlights under Bond Program)

3. Water Drop Program
💧
: Even after having to postpone public water drops, our team is still constantly in the desert scouting and dropping the supplies necessary for survival. Their work never stops because the need never stops.

233 more virus cases reported at ICE facility in Arizona

By Associated Press

"ELOY, Ariz. (AP) — Immigration and Customs Enforcement has reported 233 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 at one of its facilities in Arizona.

The infections are at the La Palma Correctional Center in Eloy, which has so far seen a total of 356 cases. No other facility reported even close to as many cases as La Palma did on Friday, with most detention centers seeing single-digit increases.

It’s unclear how many people are detained at La Palma, but overall there are more than 21,000 people being held in ICE custody on civil immigration violations nationwide."

Who gets asylum? Even before Trump, system was riddled with bias and disparities

An asylum seeker’s chances at protection hinge on numerous factors that often seem arbitrary — from location to nationality to individual judge assigned — according to a Union-Tribune analysis of immigration court records

By Kate Morrissey and Lauryn Schroeder

"For the world’s most vulnerable, protection in the United States has all but disappeared.

Wait times for asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border that already seemed indefinite now seem impossible. Families struggle to find food and shelter to outlast a pandemic order with no end date.

Those who cross north are sent back to Mexico in a matter of hours — or even put onto planes back to the countries from which they fled — without any opportunity to explain why they came.

In its response to COVID-19, the Trump administration achieved what it long sought, a shutdown of the U.S. asylum system. And with new regulations introduced this summer, the administration has moved to squeeze out any real chance at refuge in case the pandemic order is lifted."

Asylum data stymied by errors, missing information

Researchers found that more than 1 million records of U.S. immigration cases were missing from recently released government databases

By Lauryn Schroeder and Kate Morrissey

"The Trump administration for years has used asylum data and grant rates to argue for stricter enforcement at the U.S. border and less processing of asylum requests nationwide. But records about asylum claims are notoriously complicated, and experts have questioned the data’s reliability, accuracy and effectiveness in tracking a complex legal system.

According to a San Diego Union-Tribune review of records, immigration court data — which is tracked and released by the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) within the Department of Justice and used by the government to calculate statistics for policy decisions — is hamstrung by errors and inconsistencies and is missing information."
