This is infuriating.

After months of pressuring the State Senate to move forward California’s most important climate justice bill of the year – AB 345 was pulled from the agenda this week, killing the bill by default.

Thousands of you called key senators and signed petitions – and it’s because of this hard work that we came within just one vote of moving this bill ahead. That wasn’t a guarantee, and we should be proud. But with or without this bill, we cannot let all our work and grassroots energy for a fossil fuel phase out fall away – starting with a 2,500 ft setback.

We need to double down and demand that Governor Newsom step up and protect our communities during this pandemic and beyond. We want to ramp up the pressure on Newsom with an upcoming (socially distant) action, but we need your help.

The truth is Gavin Newsom doesn't need the state legislature’s approval to pass a setback law. He can direct the California Geologic Energy Management Division (known as “CalGEM”) to implement these policies right now – and that’s what we’re demanding.

But it will take a lot of effort, creativity, and grassroots pressure to get Newsom’s attention. We have some very exciting plans in the works for this month that we can’t share fully yet – but we promise that you’ll be the first to know.

With your help we can double down on our momentum and bring this grassroots energy for setbacks straight to Gavin Newsom’s backyard.

Every day that he refuses, Newsom is putting fossil fuel profits ahead of the lives of Black and Brown communities who largely suffer the public health consequences – on top of this deadly pandemic. Enough is enough.
