Dear John,

Today, the Arizona Supreme Court delivered a devastating final blow to the Protect Education Act, and to the hundreds of thousands of Arizona voters who signed in just 14 weeks. These voters overwhelmingly expressed their desire to rein in our state’s $1 billion ESA voucher program and add guardrails for safety, accountability, and transparency to the private school funding program that’s bleeding Arizona public schools dry. Nevertheless, the Court ruled on a core issue of double counting duplicates, and in getting the call wrong, they deprived Arizona voters of their voice. In the end, the measure failed by only 3% of the signatures turned in.

The lengths that the voucher lobby went to invalidate signatures with scorched-earth legal objections shows just how terrified they are of Arizona voters actually having a say in how our tax dollars are spent, and how sure they were that Arizona voters would prioritize funding a robust public education system over private schools that pick and choose students and create a segregated system of haves and have-nots.

To our volunteers: We see you, we grieve with you, and we honor your relentless efforts collecting signatures in the hot sun out of love for Arizona students and a desire to do what’s right for the future of our state.

To our coalition partners across the state who worked with us tirelessly in the field: We couldn’t have gathered these hundreds of thousands of signatures without you, and we will continue fighting alongside you for our public schools that serve all students and for our communities.

Despite the outcome, the Protect Education initiative was a worthy battle, and our efforts are far from naught. Fighting for what you believe in matters, and we have given hundreds of thousands of voters the opportunity to learn about this critical issue and sign their name on something they believe in. These conversations truly matter as we work to shelter our kids from the war against public education that has festered in this state for too long. We all know that these battles are not won overnight, but take years and years of resilience and fortitude. We are in it for the long haul.

Arizona voters have delivered a crystal clear mandate to the Arizona state legislature to enact the reforms laid out in Prop. 212. For our part, Save Our Schools Arizona intends to deliver a legislature in November that will do just that. We hope you will channel your disappointment into action, and join us in knocking doors and talking to your fellow neighbors to flip the legislature to one that will protect our students, our educators, and our public schools that serve all students.
