The Conversation: The GOP keeps screwing up—as Democrats gain momentum



GOP screwups.



That’s the broad theme this week—all the ways Republicans just suck at life.
They were handed full power—the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court.
And they’ve somehow managed to turn the whole country against them, even their
natural allies.



Take my story on the manosphere, for example. The network of young “alpha” men
on podcasts, YouTube, and other social media outlets was all-in for President
Donald Trump in 2024. Yet, as he has with so many of his allies, Trump has
systematically alienated that crowd.

The lawyer representing the reprehensible Tate brothers is now threatening
Trump with electoral consequences if he doesn’t bail out the two alleged sex
offenders currently being extradited to the United Kingdom. But the damage is
already done. The war with Iran and the ICE gestapo raids, among other things,
have already done their damage.

These noxious bros thought they were supporting an America-first alpha manly
man. Instead, they’ve gotten a stooge of a president who, well, does this:

The manosphere bros are the worst, but if they decide politics ain’t for them,
then we all win. Because otherwise, they’ll keep enabling the most incompetent
fools possible.



And there’s plenty of incompetence to go around.

Meanwhile, nutso primaries in Wisconsin and Michigan gave Democrats a preview
of the Great Ideological Battles of 2027, as we all approach the 2028
presidential primary season.



In Michigan, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic Senate primary, giving the
party’s left flank a huge opportunity to strengthen the Senate’s progressive
wing. In a neutral political year, his name and ideology might prove a tough
fit for a state Trump won two out of three times. In this anti-Republican
environment? He’s definitely running in a good year.

In Wisconsin, Democrats dodged a bullet by narrowly defeating DSA candidate
Francesca Hong, who embodied the worst excesses of the “Woke 1.0” era—calls for
the total abolition of police, eliminating Thanksgiving as a “colonizer”
holiday, and more.

Asked about Hong’s positions on a Sunday morning talk show, Rep. Alexandria
Ocasio-Cortez—who admitted she is considering a presidential run—laughed it
off, saying, “Woke One was crazy!”

Objectively, it was. And its strongest adherents—at least the ones who want to
win elections—are now backtracking.



It’s not surprising that one of Zohran Mamdani’s first acts in office was to
hire more cops. Public safety is popular. Undermining it is electoral poison.
And Mamdani is not dumb.

But the leftist-moderate rift is certainly real. It may be muted now, with
everyone focused on November, but expect that debate to go supernova once the
presidential primary cycle gets underway.

For now, though, Democrats have bigger fish to fry.



Because, believe it or not, they are now slightly favored to win the Senate
this November.

The fact that this is even remotely possible is mind-blowing. The path to a
Democratic majority runs through solidly red states like Alaska, Iowa, Kansas,
Nebraska, Ohio, and Texas. In any normal political environment, that should
make a Senate takeover nearly impossible.



But this isn’t a normal political environment.



Republicans really are that incompetent.



It isn’t just the manosphere bros abandoning them. Trump and his party have
spent years building a coalition around grievance, resentment, and the promise
that they alone could smash the system and make everything work again.



Now they have power.



And voters are getting to see what happens when these people actually try to
use it.
