Since the start of the pandemic, thousands of people have been evicted. Tens of millions have faced eviction. But we still haven't canceled rent.
My friend, Rep. Ilhan Omar, introduced a bill to cancel rent — but it's been sitting in committee since April. We've known about this problem since March.

And, John, don't be fooled by the national eviction moratorium.
With 51 million people unemployed — and no second relief bill in sight — we can't just provide more time to cover months of missed rent. That only delays the problem until the end of the year.
And that moratorium does nothing to help those thousands of people who have already been evicted.
If we're not going to help people actually pay their rent, then we need to cancel it. This isn't a new or radical idea — but it's one that needs our support if we're going to make it reality.
