Interview Spotlight
Each month, the Texas Campaign interviews people with lived experience with
regards to teen pregnancy or sex education in Texas to learn about their
experience and to help us incorporate youth voice into everything we do.
The impact of their first-hand experience helps inform our future work
across the state.
This month, we interviewed Zahria Thomas. Zahria did not learn about sex ed
in school and felt lucky to find external resources and organizations, like
Ntarupt, to help guide her.

Join our Focus Groups...
Despite declines in the teen birth rate over the last two decades, both
nationally and in Texas, disparities persist and rates remain high in many
populations and communities. Given this reality and a rapidly evolving
landscape, the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is working to
realign policy priorities and programming to support efforts across the
state. As part of this work, the Texas Campaign has retained the services
of the 1000 Feathers consulting firm to conduct surveys, focus groups and
interviews with stakeholders, including teens, parents, educators, social
workers, community leaders, faith leaders, elected officials, academics,
providers and philanthropists.
IF YOU ARE LOCATED IN AMARILLO OR SOUTH TEXAS AND ARE INTERESTED IN
PARTICIPATING IN THE FOCUS GROUP FOR YOUR AREA, EMAIL
[email protected]. THE SOUTH TEXAS GROUP WILL MEET VIRTUALLY ON OCT.
30; THE AMARILLO GROUP WILL MEET VIRTUALLY ON NOV. 12.

AUGUST SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: DR. HECTOR CHAPA!
"I am a Board Certified OB/GYN physician in clinical practice in
Bryan-College Station, Texas, but my true passion lies in medical
education. I am honored to be an assistant clinical professor for OB/GYN
for Texas A&M University’s College of Medicine. At the medical school, I
am also the OB/GYN clerkship director and the director of interprofessional
education. I have the unique privilege of building up, training, and
launching new medical doctors into the world. I believe that is my true
passion and calling."

Consent Education
Healthy Futures of Texas [10], The Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen
Pregnancy, and the North Texas Alliance to Reduce Unintended Pregnancy in
Teens (NTARUPT) [11] have teamed up to form Texas Is Ready [12], a movement
advocating for improved sex education curriculum standards for Texas youth.
In November 2020, the State Board of Education will update the basics of
sexual health education in Texas, and leading up to that decision,
representatives from each of the organizations making up Texas Is Ready
will release regular blogs explaining the broad range of issues related to
sexual health education in Texas.
The topic of consent is both a major cultural topic and legal construct.
The intersection of the two leads to potentially complex conversations with
young people. The Health TEKS must do a better job of providing guidance on
consent education. CLICK HERE [13]to read why our Director of Policy and
Data, Jen Biundo, thinks consent is a foundational topic for healthy and
safe relationships.
Adolescent-Centered Contracpetive Counseling Webinar
Join the Adolescent Health Initiative [14], University of Michigan
Department of Pediatrics, and the Contraceptive Choice Center for an
interactive webinar, Adolescent-Centered Contraceptive Counseling: Adopting
a Shared Decision-Making Model, on September 23 at 12:00 PM EST. This
engaging professional development opportunity will help attendees define
what a shared decision-making model for adolescent contraceptive counseling
is and how it fits into a reproductive justice framework.
