With your help, we’ve long advocated for all drug decriminalization as a crucial step toward ending the disastrous drug war. Now we have a first-of-its-kind plan for how to make it happen nationwide.

Dismantling the Federal Drug War: A Comprehensive Drug Decriminalization Framework [link removed] is our new proposal outlining how to end the criminalization of people who use drugs and begin repairing the harms of drug enforcement. Here are some of the ways we can do it: 

-End criminal penalties for personal drug possession so that nobody gets arrested, goes to jail or prison, or faces criminal punishment for possessing a small amount of a drug for personal use.

-Dismantle the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and shift authority for classifying and regulating controlled substances to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

-Move federal resources away from futile law enforcement strategies to supportive initiatives to protect the public health and safety.
