The Transformation Fund: Rapid Response Grantmaking Continues

On Sunday, May 31st, Headwaters responded to the murder of George Floyd by setting up The Transformation Fund <[link removed]>. We wanted to move money quickly to frontline organizations as they kept fighting against an ongoing culture of institutional violence and white supremacy. We also wanted to support the long-term movement work for real change required for our collective liberation.

Two longtime, trusted Headwaters donors pledged a combined total of $ 2 million in early June to seed the Fund. They gave us full permission to flexibly use those dollars, which helped us inspire donors at all levels to give. We recently made general operating grants to organizations using The Transformation Fund support. These first investments prioritize groups that led by and for Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color (BIPOC).

Executive Director Maria De La Cruz <[link removed]> said, "The fact is, organizers have been working for racial justice for generations. The wins we see today—notably led by BIPOC youth and young adults—are examples of what it means to build power with and in community. Rapid response grantmaking at Headwaters tunes us in to real-time needs and lets us get grant dollars to where they will be most helpful."

The Transformation Fund grant recipients are:

* Association for Black Economic Power: Pimento Fund
* African Career and Education Resource, Inc.
* Al Ma’uun (Masjid An Nur)

Our thanks to everyone in the community who helped make The Transformation Fund and these grants possible.

For over 500 years since the colonization of the Americas, Indigenous Peoples have survived through Revolutionary Evolution of Resistance and Resilience.
Our ancestors and elders have gone through great lengths and centuries of enduring sacrifice, trauma yet never giving up to pass on ancestral knowledge and traditions from one generation to the next.
We are excited to support the next generation of emerging young organizers as they have been co-coordinating rallies, marches and events since the death of George Floyd which has ignited the necessity to continue fighting the injustices that Native, Black, Brown Indigenous communities have been dealing with for too long.
This outdoor event is free and open to the public. It is a space of love and celebration in the face of fighting against a pandemic, political, social, environmental injustices and over 500 years of resisting colonization.
