As many of you know, the federal government’s $600 weekly boost to unemployment benefits expired on July 31st, with no action taken to renew the legislation. The House passed the HEROES Act months ago, which would provide funding to protect essential workers, support unemployed workers, provide funds for schools, colleges, and daycare centers to safely reopen or adapt, allow for student debt relief, and so much more. Meanwhile, the Senate is embroiled in a power struggle, refusing to pass the HEROES Act or any legislation addressing the urgent needs of everyday Americans. I can hear the desperation from my constituents, who are struggling to make ends meet and are relying on federal and state assistance programs.

I am doing everything I can to preserve the physical and economic health of my constituents through this unprecedented crisis. But I can not do this alone. Action must be taken at both the state and federal level to guarantee the people we serve are not forgotten. If the federal government is unable to provide aid, the State of Ohio must step up to protect our most vulnerable citizens. My Democratic colleagues and I have written a number of bills that will address some of the most serious issues, and we are asking to be called back into Session to pass these critical pieces of legislation.

Ohio Statehouse Schedule

The Ohio House is currently not in session. Traditionally members are given an extended period to be in their districts in the summer months to meet with constituents. Sessions are tentatively scheduled for mid-September, with a break for campaigning prior to Nov. 3rd. We will resume in November and work until close to the end of December. Many of the bills that have been written will work their way through committees, or may be added to other bills as amendments. Hopefully, many of the bills will pass that address systemic racism, health care, education, and the economic challenges that face us all.
