SEPTEMBER 2019
IN THIS ISSUE: Give Yourselves a Hand, You Can Still Register for the JuST Conference and the Ambassador Reception! Warnings on Photos/Hashtags/Predators, Social Media & You, Q&A: You Asked-We Answered RE: Ambassador products and discounts, and Just For Guys: We All Have a Part
Dear John,
GIVE YOURSELVES A BIG HAND!
I just tallied up all of the Ambassador reports you've sent in for the first half of 2019, and it's crazy how much you have accomplished Jan - Jun!
Events reported in 19 states
12,527 people in audiences
137 event reports submitted
59 Chosen showings
27 hosted booths or info tables
26 general presentations, including DMST
25 Other types of presentations
Ohio and Georgia tied with the most events reported: 25; and California and Wisconsin both had 13, while Pennsylvania, showed up in a close third place with 12 events reported. Way to get on the map everyone!
If you are an active Ambassador, but not reporting your events, we need your numbers too! Even if you only meet with two or three community leaders, or host a table at an event, we want to hear from you!

and fill out the form to tell us the date/location/event type and host, how many were in your audience, any funds raised, and the names and contact info of new leads. All of that information is entered into your file's Activity History, and it helps us report to our donors where prevention education is being distributed. Because we'll never know how many kids were kept from traffickers, we are able to give donor's the measurables of how many students and adults heard the prevention presentation, or picked up our materials. We know kids are safer because of your hard work, and we want to be sure we have a record of it.
Please use the electronic reporting tools, as it helps our awareness team keep up with your many events, and also decreases human error in reading sign-up sheets and deciphering handwriting. Often you are familiar with who signed up because you spoke to them, and you know more about them, making it easier to decipher what they wrote. Sometimes it takes a volunteer 2 hours to enter a single event report by trying to read scanned, often fuzzy reports. Thank you for helping expedite the process by reporting your new contacts online. NOTE: When entering the contact information, at the end of each entry click the + sign, not the Submit button. That button ends your entry and will send your report without all of your contacts entered. I'm sure you can guess how I learned that valuable lesson! Yep,hit Submit with just 1 of 23 contact names entered and had to start all over again. I know you can feel my pain, so I'm sparing yours. Hit the + sign at the end of the first entry to "Add another line" and you'll be just fine!
WE WANT TO SAY "THANK YOU" AND ASK YOU TO KEEP SENDING IN YOUR EVENT REPORTS.

Occasionally we send individual emails specifically for your state. It may be based on your location (State advocacy), or based on your interests (want to help with research?) and sometimes there's breaking news we want to send to all Ambassadors in the USA.
PLEASE DON'T GO - if you hit "unsubscribe" on any Shared Hope email, you will be removed from ALL Shared Hope emails. You are able to manage your preferences and select which SHI emails you'd like to receive!
To customize your email account with us, go to the box at the bottom of the email page and click on update subscription preferences underneath the box. It gives you options for how often, and what type of emails you prefer to receive. We don't want you to miss out on receiving the monthly Ambassadors-Only newsletter because you unsubscribed.

Guidelines for Posting Kids Photos with Safer Hashtags
What Online Predators Look For...
Who doesn’t love to scroll through their social media, see images of those sweet kiddos, and giggle at the witty hashtags? It’s inherent of those with children to want to show everyone how cute they are and brag about their accomplishments. In an article posted on For Every Mom
[link removed]
, parents post an average of 1,500 photos of their children before they are 5 years old. Unfortunately, while social media platforms provide a way for us to share photos with friends and family from afar, there are those that are using these platforms, specifically via seemingly innocent hashtags for their own immoral, and often deviant behaviors.
Hashtags are words and phrases proceeded by the # symbol. They serve as a way to tag photos and follow along with certain topics. While seemingly harmless, recent studies have found that pedophiles are using hashtags to prey on children. The use of hashtags makes an innocent post searchable and perpetrators are then able to distribute images of our children and compromise their privacy. According to the Child Rescue Coalition
[link removed]
, there are more than 100 hashtags that should be avoided by parents which include things like: #bathtimefun, #toddlerbikini, and #skinnybabybooty. The organization suggests that parents ask yourself the following before posting:
Why am I sharing this?
Would I want someone else to share an image like this of me?
Would I want this image of my child viewed and downloaded by predators on the Dark Web?
Is this something I want to be part of my child’s digital life?
As Ambassadors in this age of technology, we are inundated with questions from parents and those working closely with children about the risks that exist in cyber space. While we may not be able to stop predators directly, we can provide education and information about and to our children so that they are not mistakenly put at risk. Shared Hope International has recently released the Internet Safety Series

(ISS) with the primary goal being to protect our children online. One of the best things we can do for parents and those working closely with children is equip them with the tools they need to help keep our children safe.

JUST FOR GUYS
GUEST BLOG: We All Have a Part
by Butch Yarnell, SHI board member, Ambassador and Defender
I retired May 1st and May 3rd I was on an airplane with Linda Smith for meetings in Orlando, Tampa, and Jamaica. I could keep up with her only because she was still recovering from a broken leg! The non-stop itinerary goes something like this: We attended a regional Soroptimist conference where Linda spoke. We went to an impromptu meeting with some influential people in Tampa who wanted advice about how to put protections in place and train people for the 2021 Super Bowl. We went to dinner with another board member and a survivor whose story was heartrending to me, but I was impressed with her resilience. We went to breakfast with another lady who was active as an Ambassador in the Tampa area. Then we got on an airplane to Jamaica and stayed at a home with ten girls with babies who had no support. My favorite part was holding babies that really seemed to like me and didn’t want to get down from my lap. Then to another home sponsored by Shared Hope where we toured the school they had created to give freed girls job training for cosmetology, computer skills for the hospitality industry, and even bartending training.
Are you out of breath yet? And I hadn’t even been to India, Nepal or Washington D.C., or the myriad of other places where Shared Hope is active, but I was aware there was a lot of work being done! Everywhere I went women were doing the heavy lifting. Men, the ladies have done an amazing and awesome work in bringing juvenile sex trafficking to the visibility where it is today. The children they have protected, survivors they have empowered, and the laws they are changing to finally bring justice for these abused boys and girls, is phenomenal. The women of Shared Hope are at the forefront of this battle, and Men, it is time we step up. It’s past time really. We need to be the Defenders we were created to be as warriors and protectors. So what part of the solution are you going to be? By not being an active part of the solution, our silence becomes part of the problem. Here are some ideas:
Sign the Defenders pledge
[link removed]
and help other men be aware how our culture views others, in particular, women, to be objects. Change your choice of hamburgers to the one who doesn’t us girls in bikinis selling their product. Don’t buy deodorant that shows ladies flocking to touch you, and instead just buy a deodorant that works. Don’t watch a movie if others describe it as, “It wasn’t that bad.”
Go out with our lady ambassadors when they do presentations. Support them by (literally) manning their resource table.
Encourage others to take the free online Ambassador training and help them learn how to do presentations with you.
Respond to the call when Defenders are asked to attend a forum on how we can make the Defenders more effective. Defenders needs to hear from men who have already pledged so we are able to continue to uphold the legacy Vern Smith started, until it comes to fruition.
Respond to the call when we ask for people to pray because we need that shield of protection when we are poking the devil in the nose and “invading the darkness.”
There are many opportunities to Defend. Call us, email us
