Polish Election Marred by Antisemitism and Homophobia

A new

blog by ADL Director of European Affairs Andrew Srulevitch on the Polish election, which saw incumbent President Andrzej Duda defeat Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski by 51%-49%, examines how the Duda campaign turned negative, and used antisemitic and homophobic language that was elevated by state media.

Examples of antisemitic and homophobic statements include: state TV ran claiming that Trzaskowski would “sell out” Poland and take money from Polish families to pay “Jewish interests;” Duda disparaging the LGBTQ community by saying “LGBT are not people, they are an ideology;” and Duda referring to the campaign for LGBTQ rights as an “ideology” that was “more destructive” than “Communism,” a hard-hitting judgment in a country that is deeply anti-Communist across the political spectrum.
