Among the most at-risk are the billions of farmed animals trapped within our food system, especially those transported during severe winter weather.
Crammed onto open trucks with no protection from brutal wind or freezing temperatures, animals are left to endure extreme conditions during transport. Many suffer—and some die—because existing standards are inadequate and rarely enforced.

The only federal law protecting farmed animals during transport—the Twenty-Eight Hour Law—has no record of USDA enforcement. That’s why stronger policies are critical. The Humane Transport of Farmed Animals Act

would require the Department of Transportation (DOT) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to actively monitor transport, ensuring animals are protected and the law is followed.
